[Bug 597078] New: intel [GM45] [mi] EQ overflowing. The server is probably stuck in an infinite loop.
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=597078 http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=597078#c0 Summary: intel [GM45] [mi] EQ overflowing. The server is probably stuck in an infinite loop. Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.3 Version: Factory Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: X.Org AssignedTo: bnc-team-xorg-bugs@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: seife@novell.slipkontur.de QAContact: xorg-maintainer-bugs@forge.provo.novell.com Found By: Community User Blocker: --- Created an attachment (id=354778) --> (http://bugzilla.novell.com/attachment.cgi?id=354778) xorg log file with backtrace see the attached logfile. I had to remotely log in and kill the beast with "kill -9". "Standard" Factory installation, X11:Xorg repository added, updated today. "i915.powersave=0" boot parameter because of bug 596844. I played around with the KDE4 desktop effects: the sliding in- and out start menu, the menu of the battery applet and the menu of the "disk mounting applet". I slid them in an out repeatedly. Suddenly the X server locked up, but the mouse cursor was still moving. The animation of my animated mouse cursor stopped. Logfile is attached. I'd say the X server was doing a correct interpretation of the situation ;) -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

From time time, especially when triggering a kwin effect, it seems, the X server freezes completely and i can't move mouse or switch back to console. It doesn't happen with XRender effects. It also happen with the Euphoria opengl screensaver running. From time to time, especially when changing kwin, plasma or qt theme, it seems, the screen area doesn't get updated but i can move my mouse or press alt-shift-f12 to turn off kwin effects and everything is back to normal. I think we made a big progress. I am currently running the latest Mesa, libdrm and xorg-x11-driver-video packages from the indicated repo and I am running the 2.6.35-rc3 kernel from obs://Kernel:HEAD. I have disabled the intellegacy driver and to my surprise the systems was/is quite stable. The only KDE desktop effect that I had to switch off was "Wobbly Windows". This plugin is still capable of generating the effect of a hanging Xserver, but without this plugin the desktop is rock-solid. I have tried it now for a couple of days and so far no crash. Good job! I hope that the next releases would also fix the issue with the Wobbly windows effect. My system is a Lenovo T61 with 965GM Intel chip. Also I am running KDE from trunk, so this might also have an effect. I have switched on quite some 3D effects, but still I am noticing that Xorg freezes with certain effects (Especially the Wobbly Windows and the Application Switcher). With KDE Trunk there is a new effect (Glide) which should pop-up windows in a similar way as Windows 7 does. When this one is active, it will take only a few minutes to cause the Xorg freeze. What I find strange is that Compiz works nicely with all effects and without freezing Xorg. So it seems that kwin is utilizing certain functionality that is buggy, which is not in use by Compiz. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

It seems that the KDE 4.5 (and older) desktop effects are now working fine with kernel 2.6.35.1. However KDE SC 4.6 introduces a number of new effects (Dashboard, Glide, etc). These seems to cause again that Xserver gets frozen. However I am not sure if these new effects are touching unstable code in the intel drivers or that they are themselves too unstable. The reporters use a big bunch of different components, Kernels from Kernel:openSUSE-11.3 (like I do) or Kernel:HEAD, KDE SC 4.4 or KDE SC 4.5, and differnent XOrg versions, have hangs related to desktop effects or switching screen resolution or using krandr. Many of these reports are here because other bugs are resolved as duplicates of this one. But I think we have several unrelated bugs here. I try to sort it out: 1. openSUSE 11.3 (with original kernel and KDE version) directly after login or after several minutes. Seems to be related to desktop effects. This is the orignal problem that this bug report is about. This and only this is fixed for me (with intel chipset using th i915 driver) after going to a newer kernel from Kernel:openSUSE-11.3. I haven't any hang since then. Here it would be nice to hear of anybody who uses this kernel and _everything_ else from openSUSE-11.3 with Intel chipset has the bug fixed or not.. Maybe similar problems with noveau driver are a different bug, because AFAIK the kernel 2.6.34.4 contains no fixes for noveau drm, but many i915 ones. 2. Hangs while using systemsettings in KDE SC 4.5. I think this is a different bug, maybe in KDE, Xorg or the graphics driver. NVIDIA properitary driver seems to work. 3. Problems with krandr when switching monitor settings, resulting in Xorg crashes or corrupted display contents. This is another bug in krand or and/or Xorg. xrandr seems to work. The bug reminds me to Bug #474207. Also never really fixed. :-(
Stefan, if there are any hints how to get a reasonable trace from X server, please tell it. I tried to track it using ltrace, but it produces a lot of bogus and gdb wasn't too helpful, as I do not know the code. (In reply to comment #48)
1. openSUSE 11.3 (with original kernel and KDE version) directly after login or after several minutes. Seems to be related to desktop effects.
That's exactly my problem - with desktop effects enabled, the X freeze after few minutes. The most quick reproducer is use the systemsettings/Application Appearance/Fonts dialog. After a change of the default font to Liberation and click on Apply, X server freezes. I use KDE 4.5 and reproduced it on 11.3 xserver, the one from 11.3-update-test repo and with standard 11.3 kernel, the one from Kernel:openSUSE-11.3 and Kernel:HEAD. As a next attempt I'll disable all desktop effects and try to found the one causing my problem. With so many changes to the original openSUSE 11.3 you cannot expect to find any bug. Especially with using Compiz together with KDE4 you open a new can of potential bugs. The problem described here are with desktop effects of KDEs kwin.

Doing so much changes to a released system is no long term option. If we ever want to sort out bugs, we have make reports against installation of a clean openSUSE 11.3 or at least something close to it. Seems I have a workaround at least for my GM45 card. If the VSync is enabled, X freezes are gone even if I use the desktop effects. You are clearly using KDE 4.5, so this is not number 1 in my list, but number 2, which is KDE 4.5 and above only and not fixed with a new kernel (which is already in the update-test repository).

First of all, I told you that I can make it crash by simply turning on the Screen saver. This goes for the downloaded suse 11.3 cd as well. The fact that I have the exact same problem from suse 11.3 on all the way up to factory means that the problem has not beem solved. The symptoms of this bug should be caused by a simple fact - the buffer with a pixmap is not sent to the graphics card anymore. So even if the X server runs normally, the graphics is not refreshed on a screen and it looks like X server freezed. But reading my backtraces in comment#45 you can see X server is not blocked and waits on events in it's main event loop. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

[mi] EQ overflowing. The server is probably stuck in an infinite loop. Is seht by the mi layer when the input event queue fills up in the Xserver. The input event queue is handled asynchronously in an event handler for SIGIO. This event handler updates the cursor position on screen (at least when a HW cursor is used) and adds an event to the event queue - especially when the user moves the mouse impatiently which usually happens when nothing happens. The event queue is processed in the server's main loop. This main loop is however stuck somewhere in the driver waiting for the HW rendering engine to finish thus the event queue will not be processed. The HW rendering engine is independent of the hw cursor which is realized as some sort of overlay that has no representation in the frame buffer on most hardware. Thus the cursor position will be updated although the rendering engine is out in the woods. So, the intel and the nouveau issues are indeed separate even if they both print the same message. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Just for your notice: I cannot help if you do not do updates as I said (e. g. Mesa git and libdrm 2.4.24 are incompatible ...). Either you use libllvm, libdrm, Mesa, xorg-x11-driver-video from home:jobermayr or all [available] of them from base repository. Mixing such things from different repositories mostly messes things up. You should also use YaST* to do package updates/downgrades. In comment #54 I said: "@Alexander: Please try packages from home:jobermayr (esp. drm-nouveau-kmp-{flavor})." So I do not understand why you installed other packages than them before comment #73. Again in comment #74 you did not what I said. Please tell me how people shall help if you do things only by halves. * http://en.opensuse.org/YaST_Software_Management -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I try to do exactly what you say. U wrote "Please try packages from home:jobermayr". I make some search from google, understand that are you mean and download yast "one-click" package from https://build.opensuse.org/project/repository_state?project=home%3Ajobermayr&repository=openSUSE_12.1 , then install your repository and do upgrade. I agree with Yast to update every packages from your repository. after reboot i have not working KDE system. I mostly windows user and don't work in my home system without KDE (nor with iceWM nor only from console) before. I don't know name of packager manager (yast2) and don't understand how to start it from console. That's why i ask you how to do such things in comment 74. 2. other packages installed because i use 'one-click' update. 3. after you ask to update, i use only one known method from command prompt - sudo zypper up. This method update only libllvm, mesa & xorg package. i do command from comment 71 before & after update, then send to comment 74 the differences between 2 outputs. 4. in comment 74 i ask you that to do, but you not provide clarifying answer. Should i disable all repositories except your, then make update? Or what? I very interesting in resolving loopback in noveau, please, be patient and more informative. i disable all repositories except home:jobermayr then do sudo /sbin/yast and make "software update", but not any packages will be updated. Symptoms are the same: X is frozen, no response to keyboard events (CTRL+ALT+F1 or whatever), system is only accessible from the outside. When logged in through the network, I have noticed that there is no CPU activity worth mentioning, so if this is an infinite loop, it does not run continuously. I noticed that similar freezes often occur when using LibreOffice Impress or Draw. There definitely seem to be a correlation here. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=597078 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=597078#c94 --- Comment #94 from Gábor Nyers <gnyers@suse.com> 2012-08-10 13:02:56 UTC --- Today I've hit this bug again (as I regularly do on a once a week basis) and while looking around for more information, I've stumbled upon this very informative post: https://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-devel-list/2009-April/msg02452.html Bottom line: The message is a symptom of something else going wrong. Given the variety of affected systems, there are probably multiple factors coming together. In my case, I've never had this problem while not using LibreOffice. Another interesting bit: While trying to remotely debug Xorg it suddenly came back from the "dead". After issuing `bt` in gdb, there was a lot of text, the screen flickered and a few seconds later Xorg has woken up. In fact I'm writing this very message in the same, previously frozen Xorg session. Up until now I needed to hard-reset my laptop to solve the problem. Every time. <rant on> This bug has been around for ages, there are bug reports from as early as 2009! Despite that a *lot* of distro's hitting the problem, nobody with the requisite knowledge seems to be willing to invest a little time in this. At the very least, build some recovery measures in the code; kill the Xorg session if you have to, anything better than to be needing to hard-reset the system. This incident with gdb shows that, at least in some cases, something can be done about the freeze. I wonder when the Xorg devs (and also the Xorg maintainers at the countless distributions) get their act together and start working on a workaround and a fix. <rant off> -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
