[Bug 852443] New: System hangs at random - no mouse movement, no CAPS LOCK LED response - press reset to continue
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=852443 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=852443#c0 Summary: System hangs at random - no mouse movement, no CAPS LOCK LED response - press reset to continue Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 13.1 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 13.1 Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: Basesystem AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: chn65@yahoo.com QAContact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:25.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/25.0 The system becomes non-responsive, desktop windows are not updated, the mouse cursor does not move when the mouse is moved, the LEDs on the keyboard does not respond to CAPS lock - the only way to continue is to press the reset button on the computer. It happened for me three times this day and once a couple of days ago - that's why I'm reporting a bug. My system has been running OpenSuse 12.2 and many previous OpenSuse versions, so I don't suspect that it's a hardware failure. The first time it happened, it had entered the screen saver (monitor power save) and would not return. Caps lock also did not work at that time. It does not occur because of heavy load - it occurs at "random" time (real cause unknown) even when the machine is more or less idle. When it happened I have been running XFCE 4.10 and VirtualBox 4.3.2 r90405 and Firefox 25.0 and a terminal or two. I am using the stock kernel 3.11.6-4-desktop #1 SMP PREEMPT (e6d4a27) x86_64 I don't know which software component, this is related to, there are no log messages in /var/log/messages indicating the source of the problem. I could suspect VirtualBox and its kernel driver ... somebody with more insight in such matters could verify this. Reproducible: Sometimes Steps to Reproduce: 1. Boot the machine 2. Start VirtualBox and maybe also a browser 3. Use a virtual machine. It is ok to have it minimized doing nothing and use a web browser in the foreground. It is also ok just to leave the machine doing nothing - it will freeze at some time. 4. Wait for the machine to freeze at some time. Actual Results: The system becomes non-responsive, desktop windows are not updated, the mouse cursor does not move when the mouse is moved, the LEDs on the keyboard does not respond to CAPS lock - the only way to continue is to press the reset button on the computer. Expected Results: No freezing of the computer, just continuation of work. My system is a stationary computer with an Intel Q9550 2.83 GHz CPU and 8 GB ram and a magnetic hard drive (no sdd) on sata. The graphics is nVidia - the suse driver, not nVidia's own driver. It has been running OpenSuse 12.2, 12.1, 11.4, 11.3, ... with no such issues. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
