[Bug 1100114] New: Leap 15.0 - Sometimes no GUI with AMDGPU driver (starting XDM fails)
http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1100114 Bug ID: 1100114 Summary: Leap 15.0 - Sometimes no GUI with AMDGPU driver (starting XDM fails) Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE Distribution Version: Leap 15.0 Hardware: x86-64 OS: Other Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel Assignee: kernel-maintainers@forge.provo.novell.com Reporter: krjdev@gmail.com QA Contact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- Hello, Sometimes (but very often) I have no XDM login with the AMDGPU driver. The XDM fails to start. My graphics card is a RX580. Get this with journalctl: Jul 04 08:46:17 matrix42 systemd[1]: Failed to start X Display Manager. Is there somewhere a log file for XDM? Cannot find a detailed log for this issue. Workaround: Wait until terminal login appears. Change run level to INIT 3 and then to INIT 5 and the XDM login appears without errors. I have tried to compile a newer kernel (4.17). Seems to be that it works. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

Currently I'm testing the new 18.50 (Release date: 12/13/2018) driver from AMD. The install process works with a simple modification of the install script. I installed the free driver stack. Had some performance issues (slow downs, high CPU usage of Xorg) with the proprietary amdgpu-pro driver stack.
No issues with XDM yet. I will test this setup for a few weeks and keep you up to date.
