They no longer notice that YaST/SaX2 could not detect the monitor resolution. In the past they could easily adjust this setting during installation. The same issue we see with the LiveCD, which also uses the automatic configuration of SaX ('sax2 -a -r'). Apparently users are no longer capable or willing to run the YaST X11 module to adjust the resolution. Probably because different distributions no longer write xorg.conf at all (relying on the driver capabilities to detect the monitor correctly) and therefore don't run into this issue. Users expect the same behaviour from openSUSE. The solution would be SaX2 no longer writing the resolution at all if monitor cannot be detected instead of falling back to used kernel framebuffer resolution. I like your idea for not specifying the display resolution, if that works with most drivers that would be very helpful. With all other drivers we should still try the old method. FYI. Intel had `i915resolution' to switch the resolution from 800x600 to 1024x600 in rc files.

Stefan, Yes, the 915resolution will result in the error of CRT output and the resolution change after S3 resume. I'm using Sax2 (gui and cli versions) to correctly identify the monitor resolution desired (1680x1050@60) but Sax2 test only displays test for 1280x1024@60 and the desktop resolution is only 1024x780. Sax2 correctly writes a valid xorg.conf but no matter what it describes the desktop is still a maximum of 1024x768. My nVidia card and monitor combination did require some work to get to the correct settings under 10.3 but those settings xorg settings are not working under 11.1 RC1. The LCD is connected via analog connection but the settings were adjusted for Opensuse 11.0 (ATI) and Opensuse 10.3 (nVidia).
