[Bug 232013] New: Installation failed on AMD x86-64 dual core and SATA Disk
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=232013 Summary: Installation failed on AMD x86-64 dual core and SATA Disk Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: RC 5 Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Keywords: Customer_Relevant Severity: Blocker Priority: P5 - None Component: Installation AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: max.janvier@free.fr QAContact: jsrain@novell.com Hello, When I boot on the Installation DVD Suse 10.2, the kernel don't see any HDD. My config is motherboard Asus M2N SLI Deluxe, AMD X2 4200+, 1 HDD SATA WD. The single and primary IDE port is used by CD/DVD, the HDD is on the first SATA port. Same problem with Suse 10.2 32 bits and Suse Linux Enterprise Desktop 10. Finally, the installation begins with the options maxcpus=0. Could you confirm the bug and explain to me the consequence of this options during the installation ? Is the dual core really used ? Thanks a lot Best regards Max -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

However, it appears that I have only one active cpu processor. The system will not boot if I change maxcpus to 1 or 2. Note that SuSE 10.1 installed without any extra parameters. Also, I found that an i585 install dvd does not need extra parameters. I aborted before the actual installation, but I'm sure it would be successful. The problem is somewhere in the x86_64 installation for 10.2 (only). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

The version on the SuSE install dvd does not fully work. It completes, but my thumb drive was not recognized and nothing could be written. I downloaded and used the later version from the site mentioned above. It worked, and was also able to write to my thumb drive. There are several files, including a DSDT.dat and DSDT.xml. An acpidump file is empty. (I had to use acpi=off.) The results.xml file is attached below. The original file from my semi-successful installation (down only to the selection of the installation option), a file from hwinfo, and a boot.msg file from a recent boot-up are also attached below. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

The installation with the x86_64 downloaded dvd iso hangs unless the acpi=off (or noirq) and the maxcpus=0 parameters are used. The installation is successful, *except* that I have only 1 out of 2 processors. I also checked with the x86_64 CD1 iso. The hangups are the same. However, when I tried the i586 *dvd* iso, I did not need any parameters. The installation got to the point where I would partition the disk, but I aborted to keep the 64-bit version installed. My guess is that it would be successful. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=232013 ------- Comment #18 from rpace@sbcglobal.net 2007-01-11 21:06 MST ------- For what it's worth, I've been sort of monitoring this record because it has some similarity to one I reported, 231118. So I took the suggestion in comment #16 and installed the latest x86_64 kernel. It fixed my problem. Initially, it did not work. However, that was because the boot parameters still had acpi=off (which the 10.2 final version required on my PC in order to install and boot). So I removed acpi=off. So this latest kernel allowed me boot with acpi support and that made all the difference. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=232013 ------- Comment #19 from Joseph.Comfort@asu.edu 2007-01-11 21:38 MST ------- (In reply to comment #16) Hooray! As in comment #18, the latest kotd works beautifully for me also. No extra boot parameters are needed. xosview shows 2 cpus. The YaST hardware configuration shows 2 cpus. 'top' does not distinguish 2 cpus, but maybe it doesn't have that feature. (It did at one time, but that was with 2 chips, not dual core.) In addition (!) the problem I had with the thumb drive not being detected is also solved. (Reported in the opensuse mailinglist on Jan. 2.) There are several other related bug reports, e.g. 231056 and 229217 to begin with. In bug 231205, someone found evidence that the problem arose in a SuSE kernel patch, not yet identified. I hope the people looking at these bugs coordinate their work. As soon as the dust settles, I think new install iso files should be posted on the download pages. The issue is truly a 'blocker' for some people. Maybe a new mastering? How will I know that a new kernel available in the updaters has the proper fixes? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

After many installations, I have to boot with option acpi=off and maxcpus=0. If I suppress one of these options the sata disk is not mounted correctly. So I use only one CPU ! The driver of my nvidia video card doesn't accept the latest version of the kernel. With the openSuse 10.2 kernel (2.6.18.2-34), the nvidia driver is compatible, so I use compiz with success. Abstract of my hardware configuration : motherboard ASUS M2N-SLI Deluxe (with nvidia nForce 570 chipset) + 1 sata disk. The CPU is AMD Athlon X2 4200+ so x86-64. With openSuse 10.0 32 bits, openSuse 10.1 32 bits, openSuse 10.2 32 bits and SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10 I have exactly the problem. The kernel-default-2.6.18.5-SL102_BRANCH... kernel behaves like the installed version (2.6.18.2-34). The kernel-default-2.6.20_rc5... (from HEAD) does not have boot problems, as was the case with rc4. Both rc4 and rc5 show some problems elsewhere. For example AppArmor does not start. But that is not an issue for me. My chipset is nVidia 430 (MCP51). If anyone is interested, I kept copies of boot.msg, Xorg.0.log, and the relevant sections of the message and warn files for both of the kernels above. There is some focussed effort along with reports of success and failure with recent kotd's in bug 231205. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

All USB devices instantly recognised. Originaly I had to install the system with ACPI disabled but it is now set to on. One small fault I have noticed is that when the system is restored after a suspend to disk one of CPU stays permanently at 100% after it is restored and stays that way until a reboot is done. Not a problem for me as suspend to disk isn't something i use often.
