[Bug 1095677] New: Full printer driver database missing
http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1095677 Bug ID: 1095677 Summary: Full printer driver database missing Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE Distribution Version: Leap 15.0 Hardware: Other OS: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Printing Assignee: jsmeix@suse.com Reporter: nsleasy@hotmail.com QA Contact: jsmeix@suse.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- The complete printer driver database appears to be missing. This was present in the Leap 15.0 Beta, but is missing from the official distribution. Steps to reproduce the problem after a clean install of Leap 15.0: Add Printer -> AppSocket/HP JetDirect -> <IP Address> -> Forward -> HP -> Forward -> LaserJet -> <Incomplete Driver List> Only the HP LaserJet Series PCL 6 CUPS driver is listed and this does not work with other printer types, such as the HP LaserJet 1012. The complete database *is* available after an online update from Leap 42.x to Leap 15.0. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

This is not a printing problem per se. This is a system or repository problem where the printer driver database is missing or incomplete. Were you unable to reproduce the problem? Here's how you can try this on your end: 1. Install OpenSUSE Leap 15.0 from the following media: openSUSE-Leap-15.0-DVD-x86_64.iso In my case, this was done on a Lenovo Thinkpad T450, but I also tried the same thing on an HP ProBook 4430s. The platform should be irrelevant. 2. Configure online repositories. 3. Install GNOME desktop 4. Log in after the install is complete. 5. Go to Print Settings 5. Unlock 6. Add (a printer) 7. Select AppSocket/HP JetDirect and provide a correct IP address. 8. Click "Forward". 9. Select HP (in my case). 10. Click "Forward". 11. Select LaserJet (in my case). 12. Notice that only one (apparently token) printer driver is listed in this category. As noted in my original bug report: The complete printer driver database appears to be missing. This was present in the Leap 15.0 Beta, but is missing from the official distribution. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

I assume "Install GNOME desktop" and "Go to Print Settings" means you use the GNOME printer setup tool "system-config-printer" so that this issue would belong to the bugzilla component GNOME. I do not know how system-config-printer creates its printer models and/or printer drivers lists. A printer setup tool that works in compliance with CUPS should derive its printer models and/or printer drivers list from the installed PPD files, cf. the section "Driver" in https://en.opensuse.org/YaST_Printer What PPD files are installed usually depends on what printer driver software packages are installed, see https://en.opensuse.org/Concepts_printing therein the section "openSUSE printer driver software packages". Perhaps all you need to do is to install printer driver packages? For HP printers there is the HPLIP printer driver software, see https://en.opensuse.org/SDB:How_to_set-up_a_HP_printer In particular a "HP LaserJet 1020 Printer" requires a proprietary so called "driver plugin" from HP see https://developers.hp.com/hp-linux-imaging-and-printing/supported_devices/in... See the section "Setting-up" in https://en.opensuse.org/SDB:How_to_set-up_a_HP_printer how to set up a HP printers that requires a non-free "driver plugin" from HP. In general regarding non-free driver software see the section "Printers with non-free driver software" in https://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Printer_buying_guide Accordingly this issue is invalid for us (i.e. for openSUSE). In case of issues with HPLIP report them directly to HP as described at https://developers.hp.com/hp-linux-imaging-and-printing/about -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

I encountered this problem initially using the MATE desktop and repoduced it later for my follow-up comment using GNOME. However, to repeat what I said in my initial report, THIS WAS NOT A PROBLEM IN THE EXACT SAME RELEASE OF THE SAME LEAP 15.0 BETA. It only became a problem doing a fresh install using the official Leap 15.0 DVD (USB) media. I would add that this is only a problem with these desktops on openSUSE. One does not encounter the problem on any other distribution, including Tumbleweed. Recent releases of Fedora and Ubuntu are perfectly fine. I'd like to be helpful to the openSUSE project, but your horrible attitudes toward bug management have caused me to switch to Fedora permanently. I consider it to be much more stable than either Tumbleweed or openSUSE and they are much more professional in their approach to bug handling. I used to be an Oracle DBA and SA consultant and would have to assume at this point that this applies to also to SUSE vs. Red Hat. Goodbye SUSE. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.
