https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=267292 ------- Comment #4 from mschmidkunz@novell.com 2007-04-24 04:23 MST ------- Yeah, some background information would be very helpful. As far as I figured out: "For Ethernet, 1500 is the maximum, and recommended MTU." Is this a valid information? Do you agree with it? If so, I would recommend putting 1500 into the MTU field per default and the user can change it to his needs. This will reduce the users confusion what he is supposed to do with this entry :-) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=267292 ------- Comment #5 from kmachalkova@novell.com 2007-04-24 05:52 MST -------
From my information, the recommended MTU values are as follows: 576 - for dial-up connections 1492 - for PPPoE broadband connections 1500 - Ethernet, DSL and cable broadband connections
How about this text? "MTU is the maximum size of a packet that can be transferred in one frame over the network. 1500 is the recommended MTU for ethernet devices, however, you may need to set lower MTU values (1492, 576) for DSL and dial-up connections to increase network performance". Martin, I'm not in favor of setting some fixed MTU value for all devices. In sysconfig files for network devices, no MTU value is set by default and normally you don't even need one. By setting it, something else may break. So I believe a good explanation in help text may be sufficient -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=267292 ------- Comment #6 from rmatov101@charter.net 2007-04-24 07:29 MST ------- Thanks for this Katarina. I got just that in mind. If the field is empty and no explanation, users can try to play with which can lead to degradation in performance and hard to detect failures. I don't know how accurate is this information: http://www.dslreports.com/nsearch?q=mtu&action=Go http://www.dslreports.com/faq/6264 but if it is correct indicates that MTU setting is not the one that should be played with, and should be available as expert (advanced) option. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=267292 ------- Comment #7 from mschmidkunz@novell.com 2007-04-25 00:14 MST ------- What about making a combo box instead of crowding it into the help column? -------------------------------------------------- Set Maximum Transfer Unit (MTU) [enter own value ]v [576 (dial-up) ] [1492 (PPPoE broadband) ] [1500 (Ethernet, DSL, cable broadband] ------------------------ I hope you recognize it as a combo box instead of a single line edit? :-) Katarina: Thanks for the explanation. I don`t want anything else in YaST to break :-) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
