Note alternate-tab and dock will need there metadata.json file modified as below - "shell-version": [ "3.2.0" ], + "shell-version": [ "3.2.0", "3.2" ], I intend to tidy up and finish off the package before submitting it to GF (obviously) but if anyone wants to test it in the meantime that'll be a great help (unrelated technical issues here) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

So this issue is for both gnome-shell-extension-dock and gnome-shell-extension-alternate-tab Shell Extension: Dock, Fails to load due to incompatibility with current GNOME Version. (Fails with any gnome-shell > 3.2.0) gnome-shell version = 3.2.1 SOLUTION/FIX: There is a typo in the file in /usr/share/gnome-shell/extensions/dock@gnome-shell.extensions.gnome.org/metadata.json - "shell-version": [ "3.2.0" ], + "shell-version": [ "3.2.0", "3.2" ], The above change adding "3.2", changes the metadata.json for the Dock extension to the same configuration as other working extensions. All other extensions are already configured this way. ------------------ I'm not sure why this hasn't been fixed considering it is a one line typo with a known 100% fix. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

the current status is that this extension, and dock, are not tagged as supported in 3.2 by upstream
The comments on the following commit suggest this is actually intentional as there are issues with these two extensions http://git.gnome.org/browse/gnome-shell-extensions/commit/?id=00bb650c6c9e50...
Changes have been made to the dock extension which I'm about to patch and test that should get it working, but there's no sign of any fixes for alternate-tab
I can't seem to find exactly what the issues with alternate tab are, so I'm going to try forcing alternate-tab to run on 3.2 and if I find no issues I guess we can consider our moves from there
In reponse to this, Dock kept breaking as GNOME kept changing API names, in 3.1.91 to 3.1.92, etc. So far, no API changes have occurred since the release of the stable branch (3.2). Dock works 100% with GNOME 3.2.1 (with above fix applied) and GNOME 3.2.0, including all features and possible configurations. I've tested. Alternate Tab, so far once the typo fixed is applied, works flawlessly also. ----- I really hope this fix makes it into 12.1 before the final release, as it works flawlessly with GNOME 3.2.1. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=727222 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=727222#c9 --- Comment #9 from Richard Brown <RBrownCCB@opensuse.org> 2011-11-09 22:19:21 UTC --- Andrew, You are correct Dock works perfectly with your above fix - the issues I referred to that caused Dock to be disabled by upstream have been packaged and fixed by us, and I can confirm with my own testing that dock does appear to be ready. Alternate-Tab is another matter though - while your above fix does make it show in the interface again, there are a number of issues which upstream have not yet fixed, such as https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=661281 and https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=663064 I've been able to reproduce both of these issues with the alternate-tab we currently have packaged, I haven't been able to successfully get any of the patches suggested to work, and there are no outstanding upstream commits to the upstream package for alternate-tab. Can you confirm that in your 'flawless' tests, neither of the above issues occur? Do we have anyone who could perhaps help squish these issues in alternate-tab? Even if it was all working perfectly, timing means we're not going to be able to get this in for 12.1 before release So I think the best way forward is to take this time before the 12.1 maintenance window opens to see we can get alternate-tab behaving as well as dock is. When we can submit maintenance requests we'll be in a position to patch either dock, or ideally both dock and alternate-tab at the same time -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Testing of Alternate Tab, the extension loaded when I enabled it, appears to work fine, I did not in depth testing of Alternate Tab specifically. While with Dock, I can confirm for me it works flawlessly, every feature works without issues. Alternate Tab loads fine, Alt-Tab brings up the menu, I have not tested it past that myself. I do feel that at least Dock, as of testing, is production ready. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Using the same enable fix for dock did show alternate-tab in Tweak Tools menu and did let you 'enable' it, but in reality the extension was non-functioning, with what seems to be an invisible full screen window appearing when the user alt tabs the following 3 patches from upstream were packaged up and tested in the hope of fixing it http://git.gnome.org/browse/gnome-shell-extensions/commit/?id=ef934af38d5eef... http://git.gnome.org/browse/gnome-shell-extensions/commit/?id=afa8ccd07fde8f... http://git.gnome.org/browse/gnome-shell-extensions/commit/?id=7cabe76fe3247c... This resulted in an alternate-tab extension that could be enabled, but instead of getting an alternative tab behaviour, the standard gnome 3.2 behaviour was all that happened Would someone else like to take a look at it please? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I finally decided to try installing the AlternateTab extension from extensions.gnome.org. It installed fine and works fine too. I would prefer if it would only list the applications on the current virtual desktops, as this is what I am used to, but even without that it is certainly better than the original behavior (for me, at least.) Oh, looking further on extensions.gnome.org, I found two other extensions modifying the behavior of Alt+Tab: https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/38/windows-alt-tab/ https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/97/coverflow-alt-tab/ I tested the first one and it does exactly what I need. So I'm going to use that from now on. It might make sense to package that one if AlternateTab causes too much trouble. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
