If GNOME, you shouldn't need to create files in ~/.config/autostart; compiz will be started automatically if you have Xgl enabled. If KDE, can you try configuring it according to the directions at http://en.opensuse.org/Using_Xgl_on_SUSE_Linux#Using_Compiz_with_the_KDE_des... ?
