[Bug 426580] New: Every time I plug in my USB printer, I' m prompted for my root password.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=426580 Summary: Every time I plug in my USB printer, I'm prompted for my root password. Product: openSUSE 11.0 Version: Final Platform: Other OS/Version: openSUSE 11.0 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: GNOME AssignedTo: bnc-team-gnome@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: robin.listas@telefonica.net QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Created an attachment (id=239807) --> (https://bugzilla.novell.com/attachment.cgi?id=239807) capture of prompt for password. It presumably wants to configure my printer, which is already configured by Yast and CUPS. I removed package cups-autoconfig and restarted hal to no avail. Printer is HP CP1515n, and I have hplip 2.8.7-16.1 from jsmeix (necessary for this printer). It works fine. I use the gnome version that came with the distro plus security updates only. The prompt (see attached photo) does not say what it wants the root password for. It would be better to ask the user whether he wants to configure this printer now, or not now, or not ever, or not ever any printer at all, before asking for the root password. And what if he is not root, but a user on the move? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

gnome-volume-manager runs add-unknown-printer when a new printer is plugged in. It tries to figure out if the printer you plugged in is already configured via cups. If it isn't then it runs gnome-cups-add, which requires root. add-unknown-printer doesn't think your printer is configured.
Can you please attach: 1. the output of hal-device with the printer plugged in.

2. the output of /usr/lib/cups/backend/usb and /usr/lib/cups/backend/hp (as root)

3. /var/log/cups-autoconfig.log after you plug in the printer
Empty file: -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 2008-09-11 11:25 /var/log/cups-autoconfig.log Remember I removed the cup-autoconf package in an attempt to solve this. Note: The first time this prompt occurred, I went ahead and added the printer this way. I printed a test page, the margin was off by a centimeter; I had no clue how to adjust, so I removed the config in gnome and went the yast and cups route only. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Now, to the printer testing. I rebooted, reconnected, got the dialog. Aborted. Run "gnome-volume-properties", disabled the "Automatically run a program when a printer is connected". Reconnected the printer, and got no dialog. Good!
Good, indeed :-)
However, the question remains, why should I get a dialog for a printer that is already configured. The dialog can help for a new printer, but not if you get it all times for the same printer.
So, for this feature to work as intended, you need to have cups-autoconfig installed... The dialog shouldn't appear in that case. Note that we can't fix this in 11.0 since this is an intrusive change, and the way it works in 11.1 is completely different (we don't have gnome-volume-manager anymore) and so it shouldn't happen there. So I'll close the bug as WONTFIX. This is not really satisfying, but there's not a lot we can do there.
Interestingly, there is another similar setting for the scanner, and I nerver get the dialog for that one.
Scanner is handled in a different way, I think. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
