[Bug 767442] New: external Monitor configuration gui
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=767442 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=767442#c0 Summary: external Monitor configuration gui Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 12.2 Version: Factory Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 12.2 Status: NEW Severity: Enhancement Priority: P5 - None Component: Other AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: colAflash@gmx.net QAContact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- Created an attachment (id=495122) --> (http://bugzilla.novell.com/attachment.cgi?id=495122) Script to configure external monitor (specially on notebooks). License: GPL v2 User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:12.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/12.0 At first: I did all this on KDE 4 (openSUSE 12.1). Maybe you can use it for some improvements on openSUSE 12.2 or 12.3 I usually configure external monitors on my notebook using xrandr from bash. But yesterday, when trying to explain my parents how to do this on their notebooks using one of the available guis (like krandrtray), I got a little angry. Especially krandrtray does some strange stuff to the KDE plasma workspace. Moving controlbars to other screens and swapping background pictures. I never had those problems when just using xrandr from shell. So I wrote this script which is using xrandr as backend. I think it makes this job pretty easy for normal users. And if you just click on OK->OK->OK is picks some useful default for you. Additionally the Script resolves a bug of "plasma-desktop": When switching off an external monitor, often windows don't maximize the right any more (just taking half of the screen). To workaround this, the script restarts "plasma-desktop" after changing xrandr settings. I provide the Script for further work under GPL v2. Have fun :-) Additional information: I used Zenity https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zenity for the dialogs. If you don't like it (which I can really understand), feel free to convert the script to a cool python-script (or something else) using QT/KDE or GTK.
