[Bug 780716] New: GPU acceleration does not work with Radeon HD 6450 on 64 bit system, resulting in very poor performance
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=780716 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=780716#c0 Summary: GPU acceleration does not work with Radeon HD 6450 on 64 bit system, resulting in very poor performance Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 12.2 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 12.2 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: X.Org AssignedTo: bnc-team-xorg-bugs@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: dieter.leinweber@d-leinweber.de QAContact: xorg-maintainer-bugs@forge.provo.novell.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64) AppleWebKit/537.4 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/22.0.1226.0 Safari/537.4 SUSE/22.0.1226.0 The GPU acceleration with a Radeon HD 6450 based video card fails on a 64 bit system. This happens on my fresh installed box and with the 64 bit live DVD. As a result some programs (e.g. xawtv) are not working and others (e.g. vlc) are awefully slow. The 32 bit live DVD on the other hand seems to work without problems. The first trace of the problem seems to be the line: [drm:r600_ring_test] *ERROR* radeon: ring 0 test failed (scratch(0x8500)=0xCAFEDEAD) in the 64 bit output of demsg. All other entries (like "radeon 0000:01:00.0: disabling GPU acceleration") seems to be a result of that initial error. As a conclusion, it seems that the video card itself is supported by the available driver, but it seems that something is wrong/missing in the current 64 bit diver/kernel. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Start the 32 bit live DVD 2. Start the 64 bit live DVD 3. Compare the output of dmesg, xvinfo, Xorg.0.log, etc. Actual Results: - Very slow video performance (usable only with very small video resolutions, e.g. 320x200), including high CPU usage - Some programs are not working (e.g. xawtv) Expected Results: - normal video performance - all programs should work (e.g. xawtv) I've tried to use the 64 bit catalyst driver (12.8) instead. The installation was successful, but after the restart the system hangs. Maybe the same reason... -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

The results are quite the same as with the radeon card: - In 32 bit mode everything works fine. - In 64 bit mode with boot parameter "nomodeset" the live DVD works, but with the same video characteristics and performance (e.g. xvinfo says "no adaptors present"). - In 64 bit mode with default boot parameters the machine hangs, having garbage on the screen. In fact it was this behaviour that made me try the AMD based video card for 12.2. Unfortunately with no real success... The behaviour sounds very much like the one in bug 779883. Maybe it's a generic 64 bit issue that is not bound to a specific video card. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=780716 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=780716#c3 --- Comment #3 from Dieter Leinweber <dieter.leinweber@d-leinweber.de> 2012-09-20 06:24:22 UTC --- After searching a bit I found that this seems to be a rather old bug, because the first trace I've found (in a quick search) is from November 2010. Luckily the "old" workaround of specifying a limit of 3GB RAM as a boot parameter still works, even with the catalyst driver. I now have a working video subsystem, but also some GB of unused RAM in my machine :( Nonetheless it's still a bug and I'm wondering how this old bug could survive for such a long time... -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I have a Radeon HD 6450 as well, openSUSE 12.3, x86-64, and I get the same error message you get at boot, but only sometimes (once every 10 to 20 boots.) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

At least on 12.2 the bug still exists. I've tried to remove the 3 GB limit several times when there was a new kernel or Xorg version, but without success. It's very annoying to know that there is another 3 GB of RAM available in the machine that could be very helpful when running virtual machines, but can't be used, at least with my video card and the catalyst driver driver. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=780716 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=780716#c6 --- Comment #6 from Dieter Leinweber <dieter.leinweber@d-leinweber.de> 2013-12-31 11:16:14 UTC --- Just an update: In the meantime I've installed OpenSuse 13.1 and tested with two graphic cards, one ATI based card (Radeon HD 6450) and one NVidia based card (GF 8400 GS). The results are: ATI: - The free driver that comes with 13.1 has an awful bad performance. I don't need fancy 3D effects, but I want to be able to watch some videos and even that is not possible. However it seems to me now, that this is not a "real bug", but just a "feature" of the free driver. The positive thing is that I can use all available RAM in the machine. - The closed source driver from ATI (I was using the build service) works and gives good performance, but ONLY when I specify the kernel boot parameter "mem=4gb". Without that the machine freezes when entering the garphic mode. NVIDIA: - The nouveau driver that is used by default shows the same behaviour as the ATI closed source driver: Works with "mem=4GB", freezes machine without. This behaviour occurs also when using the Live DVD. - The closed source NVIDIA driver has the same behaviour as the nouveau driver or the ATI driver. As a conclusion: - The title of the bug is misleading, because the poor performance when using the ATI card with the free driver seems to be a feature. - There is however a problem when trying to use other drivers that support 3D acceleration AND more than 4GB of RAM. As this happens with different graphic cards and different drivers I would have assumed that the behaviour is not directly linked to the drivers, but to the underlying system (maybe only in conjunction with my hardware). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

The memory limit problem triggering with two completely different graphics cards hints at a BIOS issue. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
