as time progresses, and so does insights ....
I changed the linksys adsl2+ for a draytek 2710n adsl2+ router/wifi
both windows 7 and suse 11.1 wifi stopped working immediately, although i kept
the config identical to the outgoing linksys config.
windows7 complained about incompatible settings saved compared to what the AP
wanted. could get it working, but only for one session.
after a lot of tinkering, I got it working manual.
It turns out that the mixed mode wpa/wpa2 was the problem. apparently
supplicant gets mixed up in choosing tkip/wpa or ccmp/wpa2.
this is the config file i used for wpa_supplicant: (xxxx-ed the ssid and psk)

ctrl_interface=/var/run/wpa_supplicant
network={
ssid="XXXXXXXXXXXXX"
key_mgmt=WPA-PSK
pairwise=TKIP
group=TKIP
psk="xxxxxxxxxxxxx"
}

I then turned the draytek to offer only wpa2/aes (=ccmp)
and everything just worked out of the box.
hope this helps.
