At least the diff between the Xorg.0.log and Xorg.0.log.old were basically the same. I rebooted (via ssh) and then issues 'X -logverbose 7'. I think that did the trick as the log file seems to contain a lot of meat. Let me know if you need me to try anything else. If so, does this mean that all the video drivers (i.e. intel) will either need to be updated and/or are currently suffering from the same bug? However, the xorg-x11-driver-video-7.4-70.1 RPM works fine. It started about a month ago; since that, any X.org package newer than the one in openSUSE-11.1 updates causes X to be completely nonfunctional; the screen simply goes black; sometimes the monitor goes to sleep mode. There are slight differences between drivers; the "radeon" seems to block even the keyboard, while in "radeonhd" and "vesa" at least the keyboard works. The machine is still responsive otherwise; it can be SSH'd into and when killing the X, the text mode restores fine. I'm pretty sure that this is not the hald case, as hald is running in that point; I checked it. :-( My laptop at work (with an integrated Intel gfx) behaves exactly the same way, hinting that the problem is somewhere else than in the radeon drivers.
