[Bug 1229061] New: Laptop that will only run Plasma/Wayland, not Plasma X11
https://bugzilla.suse.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1229061 Bug ID: 1229061 Summary: Laptop that will only run Plasma/Wayland, not Plasma X11 Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE Distribution Version: Leap 15.5 Hardware: 64bit OS: openSUSE Leap 15.5 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Other Assignee: screening-team-bugs@suse.de Reporter: marc@marcchamberlin.com QA Contact: qa-bugs@suse.de Target Milestone: --- Found By: --- Blocker: --- Created attachment 876623 --> https://bugzilla.suse.com/attachment.cgi?id=876623&action=edit xsession-errors file When I try to use the Plasma/X11 desktop, after a reboot I reach the KDE login screen OK. If I choose to log in with the Plasma/X11 desktop, after entering my login name and password, the screen just goes blank for a moment, then cycles back and re-brings up the login/password screen again. Apparently the Plasma/X11 version of the desktop is not accepting my login credentials for some reason. However, if I choose to brings up the Plasma/Wayland desktop, my login credentials work just fine and the desktop comes up OK. I have attached a copy of my .xsession-errors file hoping that might offer a clue. (Guess I can only add one attachment at a time) will add results of doing a hw-probe -all in a follow on post. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

I made an attempt to log in to an X11 desktop, it fails and keeps reasking for name and password to log in. I then logged in to a Wayland desktop and generated this journalctl file. It too now has the same problem as my laptop, i.e. I cannot log in to the X11/plasma desktop, I can only log in to the Wayland/plasma desktop. Happy to provide any additional info, just ask! -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.
https://bugzilla.suse.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1229061 https://bugzilla.suse.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1229061#c11 --- Comment #11 from Marc Chamberlin <marc@marcchamberlin.com> --- I have found an (ugly) workaround for this bug, from doing more internet searches. If at the login prompt, set the desktop session selection to Plasma(X11), do a cntl-alt-F3 to bring the run-level to 3, log in as me and then run startx, the system will come up ok running the Plasma(X11) desktop. Please don't consider this an isolated problem that only I am experiencing. I have upgraded another system from OpenSuSE 15.4 to 15.5 and it too is now experiencing this problem. My internet searches revealed that quite a number of people are also searching for a solution to this problem. Another workaround that was discussed is to not upgrade but to do a complete new installation. That works for some, but for those of us who have mounted partitions and then want to mount them again in the new installations, things like UUIDs and GUIDs get messed up causing real insidious problems to try and track down and fix. I have never been able to figure out how to sync those from one installation to another new installation. The only way I know of that works, is if I do an upgrade, so a new installation is not an option. This bug really needs to be fixed, a lot of us are running applications such as x11vnc and nvidia-settings (and personally for me all my telescope control software) that only work under an X11 session. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.
