I have found an (ugly) workaround for this bug, from doing more internet searches. If at the login prompt, set the desktop session selection to Plasma(X11), do a cntl-alt-F3 to bring the run-level to 3, log in as me and then run startx, the system will come up ok running the Plasma(X11) desktop. Please don't consider this an isolated problem that only I am experiencing. I have upgraded another system from OpenSuSE 15.4 to 15.5 and it too is now experiencing this problem. My internet searches revealed that quite a number of people are also searching for a solution to this problem. Another workaround that was discussed is to not upgrade but to do a complete new installation. That works for some, but for those of us who have mounted partitions and then want to mount them again in the new installations, things like UUIDs and GUIDs get messed up causing real insidious problems to try and track down and fix. I have never been able to figure out how to sync those from one installation to another new installation. The only way I know of that works, is if I do an upgrade, so a new installation is not an option. This bug really needs to be fixed, a lot of us are running applications such as x11vnc and nvidia-settings (and personally for me all my telescope control software) that only work under an X11 session.
