[Bug 1064212] New: No more partitions for dmraid devices in initrd at all
http://bugzilla.suse.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1064212 Bug ID: 1064212 Summary: No more partitions for dmraid devices in initrd at all Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE Tumbleweed Version: Current Hardware: Other OS: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Basesystem Assignee: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com Reporter: fbui@suse.com QA Contact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- Martin, It looks like there's a regression due to this change: * Fri Aug 11 2017 mwilck@suse.com - Dropped 67-kpartx-compat.rules (SUSE legacy). * symlinks "/dev/mapper/${UUID}_part${X}" are not created any more, only "/dev/mapper/${UUID}-part${X}" (with "minus") - Dropped automatic kpartx invocation on dmraid devices (fate#323743) This has been spotted in bug #1060551, comment #18. Could you tell us how dmraid devices are supposed to be handled now ? Also it seems that you dropped the generation of a couple of symlinks. That will break the setup of all users that has references to those symlinks... -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

dmraid support has been dropped. See bug 1060551, comment 27.
Martin, please use this bug to discuss about the removal of the dmraid support in Factory. The other one is about the creation of multiple devices defining the same UUID link. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

If someone wants to reinstate the kpartx-on-dmraid behavior, simply add the old rule again:
Andrei asked (in bug 1060551, comment #2): "Is there any situation where we *want* process individual partition even though it is known to be part of dmraid?" According to your changes the answer should be "no". Also Andrei (in bug 1060551, comment #18) wrote: "So we have clear regression.". I wrongly interpreted this but actually there's no regression it's just that for new installations the partitions won't exist but this shouldn't matter (see the previous question) ? -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

What do you mean "it should not matter"? 1. during installation YaST sets everything up on dmraid. 2. After reboot system does not come up because root device is not present anymore. The reason root device is not present is removed udev rules. if mdadm can handle everything dmraid can handle (I have my doubts) YaST should be fixed to not use dmraid in the first place. Otherwise we have situation where system working with Tumbleweed two months ago suddenly stops working after update. Also installation appears to succeed but resulting system is unbootable. If this is not regression, what is? :) If it is decided to remove support for dmraid from Tumbleweed, I would expect some warning in advance so users are aware and can prepare for it. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.
