[Bug 566262] New: Copying big files to USB stick is very slow
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=566262 http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=566262#c0 Summary: Copying big files to USB stick is very slow Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.2 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.2 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: kernel-maintainers@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: vkrevs@yahoo.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US) AppleWebKit/532.6 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/4.0.266.0 Safari/532.6 I'm trying to copy a ~1Gb file to a USB stick using Midnight Commander. KDE automounted it via ntfs3g. At first, data transfer rate was ~25Mb/sec which is what is normally was under openSUSE 11.1. About 40% into the transfer, the data transfer rate dropped to ~1.1 Mb and the whole system become very slow. iotop shows 2 pdflush (threads or processes) doing 99% of all I/O almost all the time, with kswapd0 and mount.ntfs-3g appearing to do 99% percent of all I/O every 3-4 secs. The system in question is a Dell Studio 1737 notebook. rpm -q kernel-desktop kernel-desktop-2.6.31.5-0.1.1.x86_64 Excerpt from /var/log/messages corresponding to when the USB stick got inserted: Dec 19 17:02:13 starfire kernel: [42995.653055] usb 2-1: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 6 Dec 19 17:02:13 starfire kernel: [42995.767886] usb 2-1: New USB device found, idVendor=0781, idProduct=5408 Dec 19 17:02:13 starfire kernel: [42995.767889] usb 2-1: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=3 Dec 19 17:02:13 starfire kernel: [42995.767891] usb 2-1: Product: U3 Titanium Dec 19 17:02:13 starfire kernel: [42995.767893] usb 2-1: Manufacturer: SanDisk Corporation Dec 19 17:02:13 starfire kernel: [42995.767894] usb 2-1: SerialNumber: 00001680D775AA3F Dec 19 17:02:13 starfire kernel: [42995.768021] usb 2-1: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice Dec 19 17:02:13 starfire kernel: [42995.768547] scsi6 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage devices Dec 19 17:02:13 starfire kernel: [42995.768648] usb-storage: device found at 6 Dec 19 17:02:13 starfire kernel: [42995.768650] usb-storage: waiting for device to settle before scanning Dec 19 17:02:14 starfire kernel: [42996.768841] scsi 6:0:0:0: Direct-Access SanDisk U3 Titanium 4.06 PQ: 0 ANSI: 2 Dec 19 17:02:14 starfire kernel: [42996.769031] sd 6:0:0:0: Attached scsi generic sg2 type 0 Dec 19 17:02:14 starfire kernel: [42996.769457] scsi 6:0:0:1: CD-ROM SanDisk U3 Titanium 4.06 PQ: 0 ANSI: 2 Dec 19 17:02:14 starfire kernel: [42996.773378] sd 6:0:0:0: [sdb] 15695872 512-byte logical blocks: (8.03 GB/7.48 GiB) Dec 19 17:02:14 starfire kernel: [42996.775361] sd 6:0:0:0: [sdb] Write Protect is off Dec 19 17:02:14 starfire kernel: [42996.775365] sd 6:0:0:0: [sdb] Mode Sense: 03 00 00 00 Dec 19 17:02:14 starfire kernel: [42996.775367] sd 6:0:0:0: [sdb] Assuming drive cache: write through Dec 19 17:02:14 starfire kernel: [42996.775858] sr1: scsi3-mmc drive: 8x/40x writer xa/form2 cdda tray Dec 19 17:02:14 starfire kernel: [42996.775957] sr 6:0:0:1: Attached scsi CD-ROM sr1 Dec 19 17:02:14 starfire kernel: [42996.776045] sr 6:0:0:1: Attached scsi generic sg3 type 5 Dec 19 17:02:14 starfire kernel: [42996.776644] usb-storage: device scan complete Dec 19 17:02:14 starfire kernel: [42996.779335] sd 6:0:0:0: [sdb] Assuming drive cache: write through Dec 19 17:02:14 starfire kernel: [42996.779342] sdb: sdb1 Dec 19 17:02:14 starfire kernel: [42996.781452] sd 6:0:0:0: [sdb] Assuming drive cache: write through Dec 19 17:02:14 starfire kernel: [42996.781455] sd 6:0:0:0: [sdb] Attached SCSI removable disk Dec 19 17:02:15 starfire kernel: [42997.661033] ACPI: EC: input buffer is not empty, aborting transaction Dec 19 17:02:20 starfire kernel: [43002.532044] ACPI: EC: input buffer is not empty, aborting transaction Dec 19 17:02:21 starfire ntfs-3g[8741]: Version 2009.4.4 integrated FUSE 27 Dec 19 17:02:21 starfire ntfs-3g[8741]: Mounted /dev/sdb1 (Read-Write, label "", NTFS 3.1) Dec 19 17:02:21 starfire ntfs-3g[8741]: Cmdline options: rw,nosuid,nodev,locale=en_GB.UTF-8 Dec 19 17:02:21 starfire ntfs-3g[8741]: Mount options: rw,nosuid,nodev,silent,allow_other,nonempty,relatime,fsname=/dev/sdb1,blkdev,blksize=4096 Dec 19 17:02:21 starfire hald: mounted /dev/sdb1 on behalf of uid 1000 Additional information about my system (lspci, dmesg, lsmod, dmidecode) is attached to the following bug report https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=564297 Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. 2. 3. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
