[Bug 227406] New: KNetworkManager don't show wireless connection (airport 808.11b).
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=227406 Summary: KNetworkManager don't show wireless connection (airport 808.11b). Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Final Platform: PowerPC OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Network AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: iakynet@gmail.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Hello. KNetworkManager don't show wireless connection (airport 802.11b), only show the ethernet connection. When pushing 'Options -> Activate wireless connection' in KNetworkManager applet it do nothing. The thing is that NetworkManager seems to detects the wireless card in eth1, but with driver 'macio' instead of 'aiport' (it could be the problem...): $nm-tool NetworkManager Tool State: connected - Device: eth1 ---------------------------------------------------------------- NM Path: /org/freedesktop/NetworkManager/Devices/eth1 Type: 802.11 Wireless Driver: macio Active: no HW Address: 00:30:65:29:34:B3 Capabilities: Supported: yes Speed: 11 Mb/s Wireless Settings Scanning: yes WEP Encryption: yes WPA Encryption: yes WPA2 Encryption: yes Wireless Networks (* = Current Network) - Device: eth0 ---------------------------------------------------------------- NM Path: /org/freedesktop/NetworkManager/Devices/eth0 Type: Wired Driver: gem Active: yes HW Address: 00:0A:95:87:21:5E Capabilities: Supported: yes Carrier Detect: yes Speed: 100 Mb/s Wired Settings Hardware Link: yes IP Settings: IP Address: 192.168.1.174 Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 Broadcast: 192.168.1.255 Gateway: 192.168.1.1 Primary DNS: 192.168.1.1 Secondary DNS: 0.0.0.0 Wireless card is also detected in yast network module. Moreover, KNetworkManager works fine for me in OpenSuse 10.1 (it can activate and desactivate network connection, detect wireless networks, etc). File /var/log/NetworkManager show this repeated times: Dec 9 18:15:18 serenity NetworkManager: <info> Deactivating device eth1. As I am totally clueless with regard to Apple Airport my suggestion was just a guess.
Is your wireless network broadcasting its ESSID? If not, does it help if you move the network to the "Fallback Group" (Options -> Show Networks -> Drag and drop the network to fallback and restart KNetworkManager).
I don't have a wireless network here, so i can't test the network move to "Fallback Group"... But in any case, although there is no wireless network accesible from here, KNetworkManager would have to be able to activate the wireless connection, showing a message saying "no network connections available". The problem, then, is not that i can not connect to a wireless network (i think it could be possible with the 'iwconfig' tool), but wireless interface is not detected/managed by KNetworkManager. Anyway, i will try if "Options -> Show Networks" show a wireless network when it is accesible... when i have a wireless network accesible... :-) I will reply with more information as soon as i have it. Thanks for your help. Does the wireless network of your neighbor show up when running 'nm-tool'?
I will try it later, when i go to home (if the wireless network is activated :-) )
Are you sure that you haven't disabled wireless (Options -> Enable/Disable Wireless) in KNetworkManager?
'Options -> Enable/Disable Wireless' do nothing for me. I mean: in its initial status, KNetworkManager interface (the popup when click in systray icon) is like wireless is disabled. But selecting 'Options -> Enable Wireless' do nothing, and the KNetworkManager interface do not show any information about the wireless interface (eth1). The interface that I believe that it would be is [1], but without the wireless network list when there is no wireless networks accesible, as it was for me in OpenSuse 10.1. In my case, the "Wireless Networks" section is missing _always_, like when you disabled wireless. IMHO, i think the more important problem here is the missing "Wireless Network" section in KNetorkManager interface, because when it finally appears it probably shows correctly the accesibles wireless networks. Anyway, y will try if wireless network is registered in the 'nm-tool' output when it is possible for me. Yes, i enabled the wireless... many times... but nothing happends :-(
Does it help if you quit KNetworkManager, move away its configuration (e.g. 'mv .kde/share/config/knetworkmanager .kde/share/config/knetworkmanager_backup' ) and start KNetworkManager again?
I try it, but the result is the same: This is my config file: [General] Version=0.1 WirelessEnabled=true As you can see, wireless is also enabled in the config file. It is possible that my wireless card is not detected as 'wireless' or not detected at all by KNetworkManager?. I had already try it (start in the console), but it does not print any log. I also downloaded the source code and built it with --enable-debug=full, but there isn't any interesting log anyway (and there is also no wireless detection). Hello.
There seems to be a similar problem in the Debian package, with some more information in the bug report:
In the other hand i do some traces in the source code, and follow the problem to 'knetworkmanager-state_dbus.cpp'. In the 'switchWireless (bool set)' method, the 'set' parameter is 'true' when wireless network is going to activate, but after the dbus call the wireless active status is 'false'... so the problem could be in the 'setWirelessEnabled' dbus call... -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
