[Bug 1139888] New: Suppressed and crackling system sounds
http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1139888 Bug ID: 1139888 Summary: Suppressed and crackling system sounds Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE Tumbleweed Version: Current Hardware: x86-64 OS: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: KDE Workspace (Plasma) Assignee: opensuse-kde-bugs@opensuse.org Reporter: herrfleisch@googlemail.com QA Contact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- Hi, I have the latest snapshot of openSUSE Tumbleweed running on a PC with a MSI H97 Gaming 3 Mainboard, which has a Realtek ALC1150 sound codec. Everything is running fine, but the system Sounds of the KDE Plasma workspace (e.g. login sound, the sound for the question when you want to delete files, logout sound and so on) are most of the time really suppressed, have low volume and sound like crackling noise. All other sounds, like music, Videos and so on, are all crystal clear and really good. Nothing to complain here. These system sounds are Kind of important to me, which is why I would like to ask if you could have a look into this? Thank you very much & best regards lspci 00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation 4th Gen Core Processor DRAM Controller (rev 06) 00:01.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation Xeon E3-1200 v3/4th Gen Core Processor PCI Express x16 Controller (rev 06) 00:14.0 USB controller: Intel Corporation 9 Series Chipset Family USB xHCI Controller 00:16.0 Communication controller: Intel Corporation 9 Series Chipset Family ME Interface #1 00:1a.0 USB controller: Intel Corporation 9 Series Chipset Family USB EHCI Controller #2 00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 9 Series Chipset Family HD Audio Controller 00:1c.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 9 Series Chipset Family PCI Express Root Port 1 (rev d0) 00:1c.2 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 9 Series Chipset Family PCI Express Root Port 3 (rev d0) 00:1c.3 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 82801 PCI Bridge (rev d0) 00:1d.0 USB controller: Intel Corporation 9 Series Chipset Family USB EHCI Controller #1 00:1f.0 ISA bridge: Intel Corporation 9 Series Chipset Family H97 Controller 00:1f.2 SATA controller: Intel Corporation 9 Series Chipset Family SATA Controller [AHCI Mode] 00:1f.3 SMBus: Intel Corporation 9 Series Chipset Family SMBus Controller 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GM107 [GeForce GTX 750 Ti] (rev a2) 01:00.1 Audio device: NVIDIA Corporation Device 0fbc (rev a1) 03:00.0 Ethernet controller: Qualcomm Atheros Killer E220x Gigabit Ethernet Controller (rev 13) 04:00.0 PCI bridge: ASMedia Technology Inc. With that I mean, that maybe (as an example, don't take the numbers seriously) 8 of 10 events cause crackling/ distorted sounds and only two are normal, whereas the login sound is next to always normal. Just an observation: the main difference here is that the login sound is played using phonon, while other notifications use libcanberra.

Okay, interesting. What happens when I delete libcanberra? Will the notification system switch over to Phonon automatically? If so, I could do that = delete libcanberra, to narrow down the possible root cause. No. knotifications is built with libcanberra, and requires it.
I.e. if you'd try to uninstall libcanberra, you'd also have to uninstall the notification system (and likely most of Plasma as a consequence).
If the notification system does not switch automatically to Phonon, maybe you could give me some advice how to do that manually (I normally do not have any clue about things like that)? It would be possible to compile it without libcanberra, but with Phonon instead (that's still supported).
I can provide you a package if you want to try it... My observation was mainly aimed at the "Sound" maintainers though. It also means that the problem is likely not in Plasma or KDE Frameworks IMHO. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.
