It happens not only with XEmacs but with many applications using core fonts with fontsets. Whether it happens or not depends on the exact XLFD patterns used in defining the fontsets, see the fontset definitions in /usr/share/xemacs/mule-packages/etc/app-defaults/*/Emacs Look into the correct one for the locale you are using. By the way, which locale are you using? Tuning these fontsets can make the problem go away with certain sets of fonts installed but often appears again with other sets of fonts installed. It seems to be hard to get it right for all locales and all possibly installed fonts. Luckily XEmacs has translated menus only for 4 languages: /usr/share/xemacs/mule-packages/etc/app-defaults/de_DE.UTF-8/Emacs /usr/share/xemacs/mule-packages/etc/app-defaults/fr_FR.UTF-8/Emacs /usr/share/xemacs/mule-packages/etc/app-defaults/ja_JP.UTF-8/Emacs /usr/share/xemacs/mule-packages/etc/app-defaults/ro_RO.UTF-8/Emacs and for other languages the file /usr/share/X11/app-defaults/XEmacs which does not translate the menus, i.e. only English menus are used. That means the fontset does not have to support other languages than English in that file which makes it possible to use a simpler one which doesn’t trigger this X11 bug (it is an X11 bug after all, but probably one that will never get fixed now, almost nobody cares about such stoneage technology like X11 fontsets now that we have fontconfig). So I can probably tune the XLFD patterns for the fontsets for each of these files to make the problem disappear.

This was tried with both the XEmacs from the main repository and the one from the M17n one.

The XEmacs from the M17N repository uses Xft/fontconfig, but currently only for the buffer, not for the menus.
