[Bug 731978] New: X11:Drivers:Video/xorg-x11-driver-video-openchrome: Playing Videos crashes X-server
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=731978 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=731978#c0 Summary: X11:Drivers:Video/xorg-x11-driver-video-openchrome: Playing Videos crashes X-server Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE.org Version: unspecified Platform: i586 OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: OBS Request AssignedTo: sndirsch@suse.com ReportedBy: pi.ro@web.de QAContact: adrian@suse.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- In openSUSE 11.4 and presently in 12.1 (12.1 cannot yet be chosen as OS in bugzilla!?) Problem: Playing videos (e.g. with kaffeine, vlc) crashes X-Server in openSUSE 11.4 and 12.1 (in kde, gnome, xfce, others not tested) with openchrome as well as with unichrome (not with fbdev). Repos: openchrome driver tested from X11-drivers and from obs home Max1 . unichrome driver tested from OSS and X11-driver Workaround: In 11.4 I installed xorg and all dependencies from (I think it was) openSUSE 11.3 repos. General logs can be given, BUT: there seem to be some issues with both drivers independently when changing to present versions of X11. As the "official releases" of this drivers are some years old, I wonder whether new fixes in openchrome ( http://www.openchrome.org/trac/log/trunk , e.g. r920 "Fix Xvideo crash on X.Org server 1.10") may have solved the problems. I tried to install from the trunk-version of openchrome, but (not having any developing experience) without success (http://www.openchrome.org/trac/wiki/Installation#InstallfromSVN , version: svn checkout http://svn.openchrome.org/svn/trunk openchrome) . As a common linux user I regret not to know, if it would be a simple solution for the maintainer to build a parallel rpm from the trunk as something like xorg-x11-driver-video-openchrome-UNSTABLE-FROM-TRUNK.i586.rpm . --- (may this helps as an example from yesterday, a crash in kde with kaffeine playing an ogg-Movie, openchrome from X11-Drivers installed): * from /var/log/warn and in /var/log/messages (full file can be attached): Nov 21 22:21:54 pilide kdm[909]: X server for display :0 terminated unexpectedly * from kdm.log (full file and so on): Backtrace: 0: /usr/bin/Xorg (xorg_backtrace+0x37) [0x80a86b7] 1: /usr/bin/Xorg (0x8048000+0x64a0a) [0x80aca0a] 2: (vdso) (__kernel_rt_sigreturn+0x0) [0xffffe410] 3: /usr/lib/libpixman-1.so.0 (pixman_region_equal+0x19) [0xb7651199] 4: /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/openchrome_drv.so (0xb727d000+0x26c39) [0xb72a3c39] 5: /usr/bin/Xorg (0x8048000+0x13c4a7) [0x81844a7] 6: /usr/bin/Xorg (0x8048000+0x13cee6) [0x8184ee6] 7: /usr/bin/Xorg (miHandleValidateExposures+0x84) [0x81ba4b4] 8: /usr/bin/Xorg (UnmapWindow+0x224) [0x809f044] 9: /usr/bin/Xorg (0x8048000+0x279a1) [0x806f9a1] 10: /usr/bin/Xorg (0x8048000+0x2d9d7) [0x80759d7] 11: /usr/bin/Xorg (0x8048000+0x207cc) [0x80687cc] 12: /lib/libc.so.6 (__libc_start_main+0xf3) [0xb7470003] 13: /usr/bin/Xorg (0x8048000+0x20ae1) [0x8068ae1] Segmentation fault at address 0x27a Fatal server error: Caught signal 11 (Segmentation fault). JFYI, openSUSE does not ship openchrome driver.
openSUSE OSS ships with unichrome, which also does not work (see description, only difference: with openchrome the x-server crashes at the beginning, with unichrome rather at the end of a video). the last official release of openchrome (2y old) can be found in the OBS (Maintainer: Stefan Dirsch), https://build.opensuse.org/package/show?package=xorg-x11-driver-video-openchrome&project=X11%3ADrivers%3AVideo As this driver (openchrome for openSUSE 12.1*) does not work properly with the present xorg, I reported a bug at the webpage just mentioned above (seemed to be the proper one, please tell me if not, I asked at the opensuse-de-IRC, where I was advised to do so). As a solution I proposed to try out the fixed openchrome from trunk (see description). I was not able to install it from trunk myself and asked, if a rpm could be easily made including the fixes for x-server 1.10 (i.e. at least up to openchrome revision 925), if not, there is the workaround to use the xorg from openSUSE 11.3 (the old xorg works fine with unichrome and with openchrome) * https://build.opensuse.org/package/binary?arch=i586&filename=xorg-x11-driver-video-openchrome-0.2.904_101024-3.1.i586.rpm&package=xorg-x11-driver-video-openchrome&project=X11%3ADrivers%3AVideo&repository=openSUSE_12.1 -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Just to add: lspci: 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. KM400/KN400/P4M800 [S3 UniChrome] (rev 01) When Unichrome crashes (mostly at the end of a video or when I close its window), at least sometimes also tty1 to tty6 is corrupted and not usable any more (that's different to openchrome), while the log-in screen of X starts properly again (and is only corrupted after changing to tty1-6). (the reason I activated SysRQ-keys ;-) Thanks for all your investigation into this issue. If I can help you in any way, please let me know. As you expect it not to be a trivial issue, you may also want to rightly drop it for now, since nobody else seems to have this problems. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I have also found this problem with a HP 2133 mini. I have found a newer driver version from OpenSUSEFactory with the release 3.37 But the problem persists.
1. The VIA GPU on this HP netbook has never been supported by the unichrome driver. 2. Release 3.37? This must be a complete different driver. Version/release of unichrome driver in our buildservice is 20110523-17.1. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
