Summary: Incorrect VTY charset? Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.3 Version: Milestone 6 Platform: All OS/Version: openSUSE 11.3 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Basesystem AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: nice@titanic.nyme.hu QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: ---
User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US) AppleWebKit/5332 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/5.0.342.9 Safari/533.2
I installed openSUSE 11.3 Milestone 6 in the hungarian language. Interestingly when using the text-mode virtual terminals, (at least) two letters of the hungarian alphabet are displayed incorrectly: I get õ instead of ő, and û instead of ű. This is the same as displaying a hungarian text file (written in iso-8859-2) using iso-8859-1. Isn't it unicode? Or are just the characters wrongly positioned in the charset table?

--- Comment #1 from Ruediger Oertel ro@novell.com 2010-05-18 14:28:50 UTC --- well, this depends on: - the charset and locale you are using on the console - the program you are using to view the file - the charset of the file itself (plus possible less obvious things that I forgot now).
can you please add more details so we can find out what exactly the problem might be ?
also what does "locale" print out on that terminal ? what is the content of /etc/sysconfig/language ?

--- Comment #2 from Tamás Németh nice@titanic.nyme.hu 2010-05-18 18:01:51 UTC --- There is no file, and no text editor. I´m just typing in bash and when I press ű or ő, bash prints the wrong characters. I don´t know about other settings you asked from me, because I´m writing from my phone now, but I will give you more info tomorrow when I will be able to access my virtual openSUSE 11.3. Thank you in advance.

--- Comment #3 from Tamás Németh nice@titanic.nyme.hu 2010-05-20 20:57:49 UTC --- Everything is the default except that I have choosen the hungarian language, keyboard layout and location during installation.
From etc/sysconfig/language
RC_LANG="hu_HU.UTF-8" ROOT_USES_LANG="ctype" AUTO_DETECT_UTF8="no" Everything else is unset/empty.
From the output of locale:
Everything is "POSIX" except LC_CTYPE, which is "hu_HU.UTF-8".
However, lately I changet the default runlevet to 3, because openSUSE 11.3 is very unstable on (non OSE) VirtualBox 3.1.8, somehow it has even lost its ability to change from X to a character terminal without freezing, so I had to start it in runlevel 3, and since that time I'm no more able to reproduce the bug!
Maybe a VirtualBox bug? Or something related to X? Sorry, I have no idea.

This bug still applies to the final version of 11.3. The problem occurs during typing in character virtual terminals (vty1-vty6) so I don't think it has to do something with Xorg. I can reproduce it even on a szstem installed on hardware (not virtualized).
