It used to work fine on openSUSE 11.1 with the same machine and is still working fine on a fresh new install with openSUSE 11.1. I tried again with the latest milestone of openSUSE 11.3 and the crash happens there, too. But back to 11.2: Normal booting hangs my machine when detecting udev devices. So I tried a safe-mode boot afterwards (no power management). It boots beyond the point of udev and waits for USB devices to complete. Then the crash happens. The last message sais something about a gyro event (see screenshot). Since my Laptop (Dell XPS M2010) has a gyroscopic remote control that is recognized as USB device, I tried to boot with "nousb". This time, my machine came up and showed the login screen. Unfortunally, I could neither use my keyboard nor the mouse: Keyboard and mouse are detachable from my keyboard and recognized as USB devices. :-( Can this be related to the gyro-driver? Can I disable it? Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Boot in safe mode 2. Even without safe-mode, the Live-CD boots to the graphical KDM login. But the keyboard does not work any more! The touchpad on the keyboard does work, but no keypress is recognized. Interestingly, the numlock and the shiftlock lights are consistently on, but I cannot turn off neither numlock nor keylock. The devices are separate (one detachable keyboard and one remote control with gyration) but the recivers may be somehow interconnected. I cannot see without disassembling the whole laptop. BTW: The shiftlock und numlock lights turn on directly after the kernel has loaded on the LiveCD at the very beginning of the boot process. There seem to be two keyboards visible by the system even before you connect the external USB one (which is DELL QuietKey one) -- PS/2 one and USB one (413c:8121, which is USB device and has actually two interfaces, one being keyboard and the other one presenting itself as a mouse). The PS/2 keyboard should be accessible through /dev/input/event0 ... could you please run evtest /dev/input/event0 and try to press keys on the standard notebook keyboard, and check whether there is any output from evtest? If not, it would also be interesting to see the output of kernel booted with 'i8042.debug' kernel commandline parameter. I've now tested "evtest /dev/input/event0" which shows nothing when typing on the integrated detachable keyboard while "evtest /dev/input/event1" shows some output when I use the touchpad on the keyboard. One strange thing I've noticed: The input device name of event0 is "AT Translated Set 2 keyboard", does this correspond to the "PS/2" keyboard you've found in the output files I have provided? Because there is no such keyboard! And I have tested all other event*, none has something with "keyboard" in its name (except the external DELL QuietKey keyboard). Is the bug maybe related to the keyboard being recognized as PS/2? I attached the dmesg output. I've googled for the problem and found http://www.gossamer-threads.com/lists/linux/kernel/1132971 which seems to describe a similar issue that happend only in verbose mode. I've booted again with param "silent" given through grub and the numlock and shiftlock lights are no longer on. Looking into the boot.msg, I see an error: "Loading drivers, configuring devices: usb_id[1276]: unable to access '/devices/pci0000:00/0000_00:1d.0/usb2/2-1/2-1:1.0/input/input1/event1" Is this somehow related? Yes, the kernel panic is almost certainly unrelated to the non-working keyboard. The patches have already been comitted for 11.2 and Factory/Stable. I will look more closely on the non-working keyboard. i8042 is almost certainly unrelated here -- the machine has PS/2 port, but nothing seems to be connected through it. The interface of the keyboard, which would normally appear under 'event1' node, doesn't seem to be registered with input subsystem for some reason. At least the file head starts with "Linux version...", so it does not seem to be truncated anymore. The problem, why the log_buf_len parameter had not worked before, was that grub seems to truncate the boot entry line. I removed the unused "resume=" parameter so that the log_buf_len paramter was finally obeyed. Could you please provide output from /proc/bus/input/devices from both situations -- i.e. when it doesn't work, and after re-insterting the modules as in comment #26?
