In summary, scim thinks it's probably an x.org bug, it doesn't look simple to fix (I don't understand XIM well enough to judge either claim, or to even be sure it's the same bug as this one when the symptoms are so variable), and there's no real activity on the bug at FDO. I can reproduce it much more easily with sloppy focus in metacity. It seems Soren's patch (1a1a42a3ca1dfaf42f1094936b71c140fc030fcb) that closed out the Redhat[1] bug and was included in libx11-1.1.5 is incorrect. There is a new suggested patch over on b.fd.o[2]. If I get a chance today I will try to create a build with [2] and see if it helps.
