[Bug 266903] New: Suse 10.2 i/o on reiserfs significantly slower than 10.0
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=266903 Summary: Suse 10.2 i/o on reiserfs significantly slower than 10.0 Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Final Platform: i686 OS/Version: openSUSE 10.2 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: kernel-maintainers@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: bagpussnz@gmail.com QAContact: qa@suse.de We have seen that the disk performance on Suse 10.2 is significantly slower than that of Suse 10.0. I originally saw this on a server (scsi disks), but have since been able to reproduce it on a standard PC (3.0Ghz, 1Gb RAM, 160GB SATA disk). To do this, I installed both 10.2 and 10.0 on the PC (dual boot). Both were installed using the defaults (in runlevel 5). Both were formatted as reiser filesystems. For the tests below, I made sure beagle was not running. ------------------------------------------------- Suse 10.0 uname -a gave, Linux linux100 2.6.13-15-smp #1 SMP Tue Sep 13 14:56:15 UTC 2005 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux Suse 10.2 uname -a gave, Linux linux102 2.6.18.2-34-default #1 SMP Mon Nov 27 11:46:27 UTC 2006 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux ------------------------------------------------- Suse 10.0 hdparm -t -T /dev/sda (3 times) gave, /dev/sda: Timing cached reads: 3892 MB in 2.00 seconds = 1945.88 MB/sec Timing buffered disk reads: 182 MB in 3.02 seconds = 60.18 MB/sec /dev/sda: Timing cached reads: 4016 MB in 2.00 seconds = 2007.87 MB/sec Timing buffered disk reads: 182 MB in 3.00 seconds = 60.66 MB/sec /dev/sda: Timing cached reads: 4012 MB in 2.00 seconds = 2005.87 MB/sec Timing buffered disk reads: 184 MB in 3.02 seconds = 60.84 MB/sec ------------------------------------------------- Suse 10.2 hdparm -t -T /dev/sda (3 times) gave, /dev/sda: Timing cached reads: 2008 MB in 2.00 seconds = 1004.11 MB/sec Timing buffered disk reads: 176 MB in 3.01 seconds = 58.51 MB/sec /dev/sda: Timing cached reads: 2014 MB in 2.00 seconds = 1007.46 MB/sec Timing buffered disk reads: 184 MB in 3.02 seconds = 60.98 MB/sec /dev/sda: Timing cached reads: 2064 MB in 2.00 seconds = 1032.47 MB/sec Timing buffered disk reads: 176 MB in 3.01 seconds = 58.43 MB/sec ------------------------------------------------- I also installed and ran bonnie on both with results, Suse 10.0 ---Sequential Output (nosync)--- ---Sequential Input-- --Rnd Seek- -Per Char- --Block--- -Rewrite-- -Per Char- --Block--- --04k (03)- Machine MB K/sec %CPU K/sec %CPU K/sec %CPU K/sec %CPU K/sec %CPU /sec %CPU linux100 1*1000 40748 99.6105847 22.9 28052 7.7 28561 55.0 61974 9.9 744.9 2.2 Suse 10.2 ---Sequential Output (nosync)--- ---Sequential Input-- --Rnd Seek- -Per Char- --Block--- -Rewrite-- -Per Char- --Block--- --04k (03)- Machine MB K/sec %CPU K/sec %CPU K/sec %CPU K/sec %CPU K/sec %CPU /sec %CPU linux102 1*1000 30340 97.2 90815 20.1 25670 6.1 19712 74.1 66955 11.2 466.3 1.2 As you can see the disk i/o appears to be significantly slower on suse 10.2. Can anyone shed any light on this? Since you're able to reproduce the slowdown with hdparm, the file system has nothing to do with it.

Does changing ioscheduler to deadline make any difference? "echo deadline > /sys/block/sda/queue/scheduler" 2. Is NCQ on? If so, does turning off NCQ make difference?
