[Bug 262328] New: single-line prompt for kdm
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=262328 Summary: single-line prompt for kdm Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: Alpha 2plus Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Enhancement Priority: P5 - None Component: KDE AssignedTo: kde-maintainers@suse.de ReportedBy: nderkach@gmail.com QAContact: qa@suse.de It would be useful to improve usability making an optinal single-line prompt for user-login instead of current two ones (e.g. like in gdm now). https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=262328 ------- Comment #2 from nderkach@gmail.com 2007-04-10 13:10 MST ------- For me it seems to be two cases: desktop system with not many users - in this case one can use icons for users, and a multi-user system - in this case icons sre inapplicable. In the first case one can simply click on icon and even don't need to input user name. Really, no need to display user name in the prompt if the icon is selected. In multi-user case it's also worth to make a sigle line which acts in the foloowing manner: User is propted to input username, after that he presses tab or enter, then he is prompted for password for _username_. That's not a innovation and it's used in gdm (for example), just seems to be more comefortable for me. After all I just want the second to be optional. But for desktop system with less users removing username prompt in my opinion is essential. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

BTW2: I really like the current KDM style - I have set it up to place the cursor in the password field on startup (I'm the only user). And if I want to login as another user (for testing etc.), I can simply press Shift-Tab to go back to the username field. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

Thanks, I've forgotten. the username (how to go back?) or alike... If you use single prompt there should be a button and a shortcut to go back to username input. My general idea that there is no need in username field when using "Show userlist" option. If you choose icon - there is no need for input username, only password. For those who don't use icon list and prefer typing, there would be a single-line switchable username-login prompt(as described above) or maybe two lines as now. User icons and username prompt in my opinion have duplicate functionality. the user list does not always list all users (if you have more than 7 users in the system) and it would be very confusing if your feature depends on the number of users.

I don't know why you completely misundertood me. This feature does not depend on the number of users. It happened that my report in general was divided into two requests: 1. Make an option to have a single line prompt. 2. Remove useless username prompt when userlist is ebabled. I've tried to decribe these features as best as I can. I don't think mockups are really needed, moreover this is something difficult to do for me. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

As such your feature request does not make any sense. And I don't support an option to have a single line prompt - you can ask the maintainer of kdm on bugs.kde.org though. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
