[Bug 1044864] New: no systemtray object for mounted removable media
http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1044864 Bug ID: 1044864 Summary: no systemtray object for mounted removable media Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE Distribution Version: Leap 42.3 Hardware: PC OS: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: KDE3 Assignee: anixx@opensuse.org Reporter: mrmazda@earthlink.net QA Contact: qa-bugs@suse.de CC: dsterba@suse.com, spartanj@gmail.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- To reproduce: 1-install only IceWM and KDE3 as WM/DE on TW or Leap 2-open a KDE3 session from KDM3 3-attach a USB stick or USB HD or insert OM 4-select open in new window when popup window asks what to do Actual behavior: 1-new window opens Expected behavior: 1-new window opens 2-as happens in Plasma 5, something appears in the systemtray to indicate removable media is attached and which facilitates eventual OM ejection or safe USB device removal Notes: 1-this applies on at least 7 different TW, 42.1 & 42.2 installations across 5 hosts (big31, big41, gx62b, hpg33, k8mmv; I have more yet to try). 2-it does not apply on one host (easystreet) that is not mine and that I no longer possess, on which I upgraded to 42.2 from 13.1, and on which solver.onlyRequires = true in zypp.conf is not present, as is the case with all my own installations. 3-mailing list thread: https://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-kde3/2017-06/msg00013.html 4-possibly related?: http://bugs.pearsoncomputing.net/show_bug.cgi?id=2780 -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

there is no kde3 on leap 15

I think what you want is "kwikdisk" (included in "kdeutils3" package). This applet tracks current mount status regularly (every 60 seconds by default) and can unmount if needed. But because this applet does not have an ability to acquire a privilege, it must be started with "root". Otherwise, unmount will fail. If you want to improve this app, please help us by sending a patch. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

I've been having kdeutils3 installed in (open)SUSE since v8.0. I've been unmounting as root, no small inconvenience. I never knew what kwikdisk was, expecting such functionality to be a default system tray object. It's good to know what kwikdisk is. Now that I've opened it I see it has the same defect as KDE4 & 5 (which it says is intentional): https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=297219 In that bug x-gvfs-hide is suggested but it's missing from man pages for mount and fstab.
But because this applet does not have an ability to acquire a privilege, it must be started with "root". Otherwise, unmount will fail.
:(
If you want to improve this app, please help us by sending a patch.
I'm no a programmer. Not having this is reason to switch to TDE, but that's a reason to not remain an openSUSE faithful, unless TDE is count as an upstream. Otherwise, there is no upstream for KDE3. Nothing is resolved, as features.opensuse.org is deprecated. This is the only available place for KDE3 "wishlist" tracking. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

This app can create a system tray icon in KDE3 and can mount/unmount/eject drives. Furthermore, this app does not require root privilege, because this app uses "udisks2" for mounting/unmounting/ejecting. ("kdebase3-workspace" requires "udisks2", so all users using KDE3 workspace can use "udisks2" and "udiskie"). After installing "udiskie", running "udiskie --tray" can show tray icon. If you want to mount/unmount/eject, click this tray icon and select one of menu items. If you want to create desktop icon (for starting "udiskie"), you can create "~/Desktop/udiskie.desktop" with the following contents: [Desktop Entry] Type=Application Exec=/usr/bin/udiskie --tray -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.
