https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=688021 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=688021#c0 Summary: Thinkpad T400 becoming hot Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.4 Version: Final Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: kernel-maintainers@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: psankar@novell.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- After few minutes of usage, my thinkpad T400 becomes hot, even when there are not any applications open (just an empty gnome-session) If I do kernel compilation or such CPU intensive operations, the machine shutsdown with a "Critical temperature (100 C) reached " warning. Some more information available at: http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-kernel/2011-04/msg00024.html Running windows on the same machine does not cause any temperature issues, eliminating any hardware issue doubts. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Shall I wait and see if the machine shuts down ? You can/should double check whether passive cooling (frequency is lowered at

acpi-cpufreq does not load on AMD it's powernow-k8 driver
There was a maintenance patch in latest kernel which avoids some dozens/hundreds of additional local timer interrupts, do: watch -n1 cat /proc/interrupts if LOC: values are increasing quickly you should update the kernel (you should run the latest anyway). Could also be graphics related if you have an AMD graphics card you should try the fglrx driver and compare. Kernel AMD graphics driver can handle older cards rather well, but misses some features for newer ones. Also try powertop or cpupower (you can get/search cpupower from http://software.opensuse.org) and try cpupower frequency-info, cpupower idle-info, cpupower monitor and examine your CPU's frequency and sleep state behavior. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

the problem with AMD K10 turons II appears to be ... Please provide output how you came to this conclusion. It's impossible to guess what happens on your system if you do not provide any output. Use the tools I mentioned in comment #15. Please open a separate bug then, it's likely unrelated to the ThinkPad issue.
