Try to please turn it off in your bios settings. (as this only happens since CONFIG_EDD defaults to "Y" for quite some time... the issue is mostly caused by buggy bios implementations, i.e. the kernel get`s stuck in a bios routine (edd probe). don`t worry, it`s not really a problem. please permanently add "edd=off" as a workaround and find out if there is a newer bios available which fixes this one. (please report here). if it`s not available, please contact the machine vendor about this issue and tell us the results. i`m lowering severity to normal, ok ? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

That his EDD implementation is broken? Why does it work in Windows? Or is it just not telling me that it's broken? Its okay to lower the severity. However the information to boot with edd=off should be more easily accessible. I bet this could lead to lots of frustration with people who try to install opensuse for the first time. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

That his EDD implementation is broken? yes
Why does it work in Windows? afaik, because windows does not do that probe.
However the information to boot with edd=off should be more easily accessible.
yes, indeed. but for about a year, it`s at least much better than before (see http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux-2.6.git;a=commit;h=... ). if that message is hidden due to disabled boot messages, what should we do then? opensuse has failsafe mode for digging into issues like this.... -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I just checked. The system boots with mem=4G or with edd=off (and legacy usb enabled). This seems to be a general problem with some laptops. acpi only works with mem=4G too. (i.e. it's probably not a edd problem) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
