In this case it seems that this partition is not present, and that searching is going on to find it, shown by dots that add up, marked by the message waiting for partition (11) to appear........ when it is found, it asks me if i want to use that partition? y/n And if i do nothing, it sits there waiting for me to confirm the wanted action. Then it boots. This is what happens. What i expect to happen is that the partition that is written in grub as belonging to the kernel marked for booting, is booted, nothing more, and nothing less. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

libata drivers (sd*) should be used not IDE(hd*). You may try to replace: INITRD_MODULES="processor thermal amd74xx sata_nv pata_amd pata_acpi ata_generic ide_pci_generic fan jbd ext3 edd" with: INITRD_MODULES="processor thermal pata_amd sata_nv pata_acpi fan jbd ext3 edd" and run: mkinitrd again. Offcourse i did.. But after 11.1B4.6 did not boot anymore, i tried to reverse the modulelist to the previous state, on my 10.3 install, which is also on the same mbox, which offcourse worked. There is a good chance, that you will be able to run the 11.1 installation with the kernel and initrd from the 10.3 installation. At the first boot prompt, you can "ESC" to the grub boot menu and edit the root= line, and pass the partition of the 11.1 installation, like "root=/dev/sdb11" (or whatever it actually is, in 10.3). Some recent tools which depend on new kernel features may not be fully working, but mkinitrd should work. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

That should not happen. The kernel should boot in any case. If the device is not found, it may not continue, but it would boot until we reach the point it tries to mount. Did you press ESC, and entered the grub menu on startup? It's the black/white screen, not the green SUSE screen.

the things you suggested did not have the right outcome at the time , no..

I may need changes to: /etc/sysconfig/kernel /boot/grub/menu.lst /etc/fstab
They all have to change, i know. But how to proper change /etc/sysconfig/kernel ? That is the point. That is hdb11, so -part11 for / should be right.
I do have a boot partition yes.
Ok, still no idea why you get hdb on the system, and the bootloader uses hda(hd0), but that may all go away, if you can successfully switch to libata drivers.
What is confusing is that the names used by grub, fstab and partioner are all different, i guess that is to make things easy.. ;)
That's because of the broken beta, which installed IDE drivers. The partitioner just shows the current kernel names. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
