http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1078548 Bug ID: 1078548 Summary: Upgrade to Leap 15.0 - screen display freezes part way through Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE Distribution Version: Leap 15.0 Hardware: x86-64 OS: SUSE Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Installation Assignee: yast2-maintainers@suse.de Reporter: nwr10cst-oslnx@yahoo.com QA Contact: jsrain@suse.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:52.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/52.0 Build Identifier: This was intended as a test for upgrading Leap 42.3 to 15.0 Beta. I had 42.3 in a virtual machine under KVM. I cloned that VM, then upgraded. Part way through the upgrade, the screen display stopped updating. However, I could see that disk activity was continuing, so I allowed it to continue. After a while the screen went blank, and I could see that it was rebooting. The install had actually worked correctly, but the screen display had not. I'll note that the 42.3 system included KDE, Gnome and XFCE desktops. It probably would have worked correctly with only one desktop (and thus less to upgrade). I had previously done an upgrade from Leap 15.0 Build84.1 to Build 109.3, and that worked (but only Gnome desktop was installed on that system). I also previously tried upgrading 42.3 to an earlier build of 15.0 (I think it was build79.1. And I had the same failure that I am reporting here (but I did not report at that time). I will attach a screenshot taken about 1 minute before the reboot. I will also attach Yast logs. I'm not sure how serious this is, since the upgrade did actually complete even though I could not see what was happening. Reproducible: Always -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

it is upgrade done by DVD, not by yast2 migration, right?
Yes, I booted to the DVD iso, and selected "upgrade" at the boot menu. I was actually using a USB flash drive, with the DVD iso written to it, though I don't think that's relevant. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

I will have to repeat the upgrade attempt to test that. Here's what I'm tentatively thinking I will do: (1) delete the VM from my prior upgrade attempt (to reclaim disk space) (2) clone the same 42.3 VM as before (3) upgrade as before (4) if I see it freeze, I'll pause the VM, and then close virt-manager (5) restart virt-manager, run that VM, unpause, and see whether the display is still frozen Does that sound like an appropriate way of testing? -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

Interesting question. I will have to repeat the upgrade attempt to test that.
Here's what I'm tentatively thinking I will do:
(1) delete the VM from my prior upgrade attempt (to reclaim disk space) (2) clone the same 42.3 VM as before (3) upgrade as before (4) if I see it freeze, I'll pause the VM, and then close virt-manager (5) restart virt-manager, run that VM, unpause, and see whether the display is still frozen
Does that sound like an appropriate way of testing?
You shouldn't have to pause the VM. Shutting down virt-manager should not effect the VM. It will keep running while you reattach with either virt-manager or virt-viewer. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

On the new upgrade the display froze again -- a bit later this time (perhaps because I installed a virt-manager update last night). I took a screenshot. Then I shutdown virt-manager. I restarted virt-manager, and opened the running virtual machine. The display had made notable progress. However, it was still frozen, but at a different location in the upgrade. I took another screenshot. I've attached both screenshots. I then waited for the upgrade to finish -- I could recognize this because the VM rebooted. And the upgraded VM seems to be running fine. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

The installation doesn't really freeze (it keeps updating and eventually finishes). It's simply the virt-manager view that, somehow, gets stalled.
