[Bug 807395] New: 12.3 RC2: rescue system image uses wrong keyboard definition.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=807395 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=807395#c0 Summary: 12.3 RC2: rescue system image uses wrong keyboard definition. Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 12.3 Version: RC 2 Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Live Medium AssignedTo: coolo@suse.com ReportedBy: carlos.e.r@opensuse.org QAContact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- I tested briefly the separate rescue live system, booting from usb stick. Very nice, good selection of software (mc is available at last!). Some problems, like not being able to log in as live cd user in xfce, only root can (this has an update, I know). Stop or reboot system does not work (Bug 807097). I could suggest diagnostic software to add if you say where or whom to tell. However, it has a big problem: after selecting at the login screen Spanish as the locale, the keyboard did not switch to Spanish. This is a stopper for any non USA user. If there is a procedure to change keyboard, please make that clearly available somewhere that we can see it when booting the image. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Hi Carlos! You should be able to change language at the boot menu: press F2 when you see the menu with entries "openSUSE 12.3 Live", "Failsafe - openSUSE 12.3", etc., and you will see a menu of locales pop-up; select your preferred language, this will automatically change adapt the keyboard layout to the corresponding locale. You can also change the keyboard layout independently from the same menu.
This is exactly what I have done - see #4 - and did not work. It works only inside the boot menu.
The keyboard layout set at the boot menu should be carried over to the autologged in user (I just checked that it does).
It was not carried in when I tried 5 minutes ago. Unless the modified image behaves differently from the one I have (openSUSE-12.3-Rescue-CD-Build0094-x86_64.iso). I'll download the new image tomorrow and try again - no, sorry, no new image available, just looked at http://software.opensuse.org/developer/en I'm using the root user to login, as the default user can not login to xfce does not work, in case that does a difference.
We have now added the YaST module to the LiveCD that does this, so it should be possible even after login to change keyboard layouts, system language, etc. Please let me know if this works for you.
I'll try that when the image is published. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Tests.
At boot menu, choose "F2" to change Language. Select Spanish. Booter switches to Spanish immediately in texts and keyboard. Proceeds to boot system, systems autologins to XFCE with Spanish texts and keyboard. Log out, change language to English in login window. Login. Language changes to English, keyboard remains in Spanish.
That is correct behaviour.
Different test.
At boot menu, choose "F2" to change Language. Leave "English" as language, but at the keyboard entry switch to "Spanish". The grub menu remains in English, and the edit window accepts Spanish keyboard entries. So far, good.
However, when system proceeds with boot, language is English (correct) and keyboard is English (incorrect).
This is the same behaviour that happens for all the live media, including GNOME and KDE live USB images. It isn't limited to the Rescue CD. I suggest opening a new bug for this (if it doesn't already exist) against the component "Live Medium".
Yast keyboard module fails to change to Spanish keyboard, either as user or as root. It displays the selected keyboard as Spanish, but it does not work. In fact, even the test line in yast remains with USA keyboard. Tested both as user and as root.
We have now added yast2-x11 that installs xkbctrl and I have now tested that with YaST's Keyboard Layout module, it is now possible to change the default layout of the keyboard to any desired. I hope that helps improve the situation over that on the 12.3 Rescue CD.
XFCE setting manager keyboard module fails to activate Spanish keyboard. In fact, entering the module shows English as the selected keyboard.
This is an (probably, upstream) issue that I will pursue and try to get resolved in time for 13.1. I see that in the XFCE settings manager, you can add a new keyboard layout such as Spanish and delete the other layout (US or whatever was there on the list by default). Then the keyboard indeed behaves like the Spanish keyboard. Seems to me that it does not work when there are more than 1 layouts added to this list. I am also asking Guido for more info on this; he really is the father of all things XFCE on openSUSE ;) Guido, any suggestions on this last issue? Hope that helps, Carlos. Please feel free to email me about other suggestions you might have on the Rescue CD. Thanks. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

What issue do you mean here? xfce4-keyboard-settings defaults to the system setting, i.e. whatever YaST set on boot. If you want to override that, you can add additional layouts to the list, the one you select in the list will be used on the next login. If you want to switch between layouts on the fly you need to add the xfce4-panel-plugin-xkb to the panel (it is named "Keyboard Layouts") which then allows you to cycle through all defined layouts by clicking on the panel icon or via keyboard shortcut. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
