[Bug 769271] New: Installation and general kernel boot requires ACPI=OFF on newer Ivy Bridge Laptops
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=769271 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=769271#c0 Summary: Installation and general kernel boot requires ACPI=OFF on newer Ivy Bridge Laptops Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 12.1 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 12.1 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Installation AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: evanevery@digitalintelligence.com QAContact: jsrain@suse.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:13.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/13.0.1 Official 12.1 OpenSuse release (x86-64) can not be installed without turning off ACPI support (ACPI=OFF). Right after beginning the installation (w/standard options), the system screen will flash and/or the system will halt (w/udev process failure). System can be installed w/ACPI=OFF but then no ACPI support is provided in the installed system (will not shut down, etc). Once an installation is completed with ACPI=OFF, removing the ACPI=OFF option from the resulting kernel boot parameters will result in the same behavior (flashing screen immediately after choosing boot option). This is quite easy to reproduce. This problem may be Ivy Bridge related. We have experienced this on a Clevo (Sager) P150EM laptop running BIOS versions 1.00.04 and 1.00.05. We have also tested this laptop with both the Nvidia graphics card option (Optimus) and also the AT Radeon option. Both systems experience identical ACPI problems regardless of the video card installed. Both Clevo and Sager are aware of this issue and state the problem is with the distro (of course). They claim the recent Ubuntu release installs and runs just fine... Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Begin baseline install with OpenSuse 12.1 x86-64 distro 2. Select option for new installation (do not change options) 3. Screen will crash with a flashing screen or just hang (with udev process failure message) Actual Results: Screen will flash shortly after selecting "New Install". System might also hang (identifying udev process failure in background). (Installing with ACPI=OFF works around this problem.) Expected Results: System should install properly and ACPI functions should be properly supported. Clevo/Sager P150EM (Ivy Bridge) Laptop Confirmed on BIOS V 1.00.04 and 1.00.05 Confirmed by us and also Sager/Clevo Problem exists with both Nvidia (Optimus) and Ati Radeon Video Card Options -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Unfortunately I can't reproduce the issue again or send you some informations for the specific laptop because I don't own the specific laptop anymore( It wasn't mine, I just wanted to install openSUSE). Finally I managed to solve the issue by installing openSUSE 12.2. During the 12.2 installation I didn't do anything special (like to add nomodeset or something). It does indeed appear to involve the udev process. (It randomly appears to fail in two different ways. It either locks up with a flashing screen or slogs along very slowly. If it "slogs along" I can see the udev info as I have presented in the attached file). I thought I had tested the NOMODESET parameter already, but supplying this as a command line option for the install process seems to help. I have been able to complete an install using NOMODESET without also having to also supply the ACPI=OFF parameter. I believe I mentioned this in my original message, but we have tested the very same laptop with both an NVIDIA 670M and an ATI 7970M. The problem is apparent without regard to which video card is installed in the laptop. Do the screen shots I have attached provide any additional assistance in narrowing this down? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

If it did work is the graphics card which is not udev issue, on some system with some graphics card this happens. It related to the driver not to udev. It also appears to have resulted in a system which is running without any problems. I haven't spent a lot of time with the image, but I have not seen any problems (at least it shuts down fine). I have made a milestone Ghost Image of the system as it currently stands and I will continue to work with the image today. However, if this truly is a Video Card problem then the problem manifests itself identically with either an NVIDIA or an ATI video card in the exact same model laptop. This would lead me to think that although it might be something video related, it might not be the individual video cards themselves (as they are both quite different). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
