[Bug 222504] New: NetworkManager won't auto-connect to all trusted wireless networks
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=222504 Summary: NetworkManager won't auto-connect to all trusted wireless networks Product: SUSE Linux 10.1 Version: Final Platform: i686 OS/Version: SuSE Linux 10.1 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Network AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: sachioj@gmail.com QAContact: qa@suse.de I have two trusted networks listed in ~/.kde/share/config/knetworkmanagerrc, but NetworkManager will only auto-connect to one of them (my network at work) and I have to always manually connect to the other one (my home network). Looking at /var/log/NetworkManager, the auto-connect for the home network fails for: Nov 18 13:18:55 Sachio NetworkManager: <WARNING> nm_dbus_get_user_key_for_network_cb (): nm_dbus_get_user_key_for_network_cb(): dbus returned an error. (org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown) The name org.freedesktop.NetworkManagerInfo was not provided by any .service files Nov 18 13:18:55 Sachio NetworkManager: <information> Deactivating device eth1. (org.freedesktop.NetworkManagerInfo.NoNetworks) org.freedesktop.NetworkManagerInfo.NoNetworks Interestingly, when I'm _not_ connected to any network, the "nm-tools" command always shows the ESSID for my work network, but does not show the one for my home network. There are two ESSIDs shown from this command, but one of them is not a valid name. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

(Options->Show Networks, drag and drop the network to the fallback group). Then restart your system. If this doesn't help it's probably a driver issue. Also, it would be helpful if you could attach /var/log/NetworkManager logs to this bug. I guess the connection attempt to "Tsunami5" at 14:54:36 is at boot time with no frontend running and therefore the call for a new key fails. I cannot say why the association fails but you might have entered the wrong key in YaST. Can you please verify? Consider to remove the YaST entry for the network if you do not need it at boot time and try again. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=222504 ------- Comment #13 from hschaa@novell.com 2007-04-12 06:10 MST ------- Open YaST, Network Devices, Network Card, select your wireless device and click "Delete". If that does not work configure your wireless card with the default options (Simply click "Edit" and press "Next" on all configuration pages). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=222504 ------- Comment #14 from sachioj@gmail.com 2007-04-17 18:57 MST ------- Ok, now that I know what I would actually be deleting, I tried a couple of things before just blowing away the Network Device setting and its associated config file. I opened the /etc/sysconfig/network/ifcfg-wlan config file for my wireless device, and deleted the ESSID and WPA PSK entriess from the WIRELESS_ESSID and WIRELESS_WPA_PSK fields. Now the auto-connect works fine for both networks that I connect to! I'm not sure that is a full solution as it seems this could be made more robust, but this did fix the symptom. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=222504 hschaa@novell.com changed: What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Info Provider|sachioj@gmail.com |tambet@novell.com ------- Comment #15 from hschaa@novell.com 2007-04-18 04:26 MST ------- Thanks for the info Wayne. Conclusion: the problem appears in the following constellation: - A wireless network is configured through YaST - The same network is in the trusted list of knm - During boot nm tries to connect to this network (using the YaST config) and fails during association (for whatever reason) - When the user now logs in the allowed list gets updated (with the configuration made in knm) but nm does not automatically connect to the network because it failed previously (with the YaST config, not with the current one from knm). Tambet, do we need to fix anything here? Should nm automatically connect to the network (after updating the allowed list) although it previously failed? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=222504 ------- Comment #16 from sachioj@gmail.com 2007-04-19 23:46 MST ------- I just want to add to your constellation at the very end of it: - The user then manually clicks on the desired network in the list of available Wireless Networks in knm, and successfully connects. -Wayne -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
