I have the same problem: not a single CD is automounted or detected by the devices notifier plasmoid, so I have to mount them with mount -t iso9660 /dev/sr0 /mnt The most annoying thing is that it happens just with CD-ROMs, but not with DVDs, and I disagree at the sight of the report of this issue because, in my case, the issue in not associated with CDs that contains logical block errors, but it extends to every single CD, but not any DVD: every DVD is properly automounted. I am not very experienced reporting bugs. Is this a KDE 4.x.x problem?

Please do so. Stop hal and check if GNOME mounts the CD automatically without hal running. And please check if there are still error messages in /var/log/messages if hal is not running and you insert the CD to the device. The HAL deamon sensibly delays the automountig of the device. 2. If the device (i. e. this CD) were mounted, and the HAL deamon were then restarted, the following takes place: # rchal restart Shutting down HAL daemon done Loading CPUFreq modules done Starting HAL daemon [at this point there is a wait for 6 or 10 seconds before the rc script printed:] done # 3. However, if the CD were not mounted, restarting the HAL deamon is fast (just a brief stop, one second, at "Starting HAL daemon" before the script printed "done"). Might I suppose that it is more a HAL issue than KDE 4's? If so, I have to suppose that KDE 4 relies on HAL and Gnome does not (or that KDE 4 relies more on HAL than Gnome). Few days ago, I have read somewhere that HAL is deprecated and it is going to be replaced, although is not going to disappear at all, in the next openSuSE 11.3. And I care a lot my disks (handling and storing). I am sure that this does not discard that the media have I/O errors, but it is unlikely. And it is very peculiar that this issue happens only related with CDs, not with DVDs. Also, I know many people that has not any problem mounting even scratched DVDs, but a new CD can not mount. Curiously, my wife has a Gateway MX6009m Notebook PC, and she has not this issue under the same KDE 4 (4.3.5 "release 0") I run. It is very awkward at the same time that it is good (in fact, very good): if she had to mount her disks through the mount command it self,... -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Are you sure this was as you created the output? If so: HAL didn't detect the cdrom. There is no volume device in HAL for the DVD/CD device. Please do this: - remove the CD from the device - start lshal -m - insert the CD to the device - wait until Nautilus mounted the CD (maybe some seconds longer) - copy the output of lshal -m and add it to the bug -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
