[Bug 508533] New: Recent alsa-driver updates break snd-hda-intel
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=508533 Summary: Recent alsa-driver updates break snd-hda-intel Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.1 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.1 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Sound AssignedTo: tiwai@novell.com ReportedBy: drsuse@gmail.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.9.0.10) Gecko/2009042700 SUSE/3.0.10-77.1 Firefox/3.0.10 I am running the 64bit version of OpenSuSE 11.1 on my Gateway P-7805u FX. My sound card is detected as a "82801I (ICH9 Family) HD Audio Controller". The alsa-driver update on 5/28 (alsa-driver-kmp-default-1.0.20.20090528_2.6.27.21_0.1-3.1) renders the snd-hda-intel unloadable on my system. dmesg reports: ALSA /usr/src/packages/BUILD/alsa-driver/pci/hda/../../alsa-kernel/pci/hda/hda_intel.c:2372: no codecs found! HDA Intel 0000:00:1b.0: PCI INT A disabled If I try to setup the card via YaST it is detected, but errors out stating that it cannot load the driver. The card worked fine with a prior recent release (either 5/26 or 5/27, I am sorry... I don't recall which, but definitely within 1-2 days). I have tried to find an archive of those days versions to test, but no success. If I uninstall the alsa-driver packages completely then sound works again, but I am not sure performance is the same. I think it might be sounding a little "tinny" and making small pops occasionally, hard to be objective when you're looking for problems, heh. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Install latest alsa-driver-kmp-default from repositories/multimedia:/audio:/KMP/openSUSE_11.1_Update/ 2. Reboot Actual Results: No Sound Expected Results: Sound -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I am still seeing some errors in dmesg: ALSA /usr/src/packages/BUILD/alsa-driver/pci/hda/../../alsa-kernel/pci/hda/hda_generic.c:679: hda_generic: no proper input path found ALSA /usr/src/packages/BUILD/alsa-driver/pci/hda/../../alsa-kernel/pci/hda/hda_generic.c:427: hda_generic: no proper output path found ALSA /usr/src/packages/BUILD/alsa-driver/pci/hda/../../alsa-kernel/pci/hda/hda_generic.c:1026: hda_generic: no PCM found But I do have sound with the alsa-driver-kmp-default package installed. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

The initial report details the issues for alsa-driver-kmp-default for 5/28-5/31 The second post details a better experience with still some errors for 6/1 I just tried 6/3 (as I believed that was your request) and it really messed my system up for a while. I could not boot, it hard locked during the process and I had to play around with a lot of grub options to get in enough to uninstall it. Not sure what combination of grub options regarding IRQs, acpi, and runlevel 4 is what it actually took... but for about an hour there I thought my system would never boot again, heh. Stupidly I deleted the 6/1 ver (rather, I installed through yast and didn't make a backup). Any chance of getting a copy of that? It did at least work. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Better to check the package changelog before installing it, though. So, just uninstall the package first, then make sure that there are no related files in /lib/modules/$VERSION/update directory. Try to reboot without alsa-driver-kmp and confirm that no "generic parser" error occurs. After that, try to install the latest alsa-driver-kmp again to check the problem. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I am still, however, getting the errors from my second post. Not sure if it is actually effecting anything, though. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I guess it's just an unsupported codec such as a modem.
