[Bug 612006] New: xen 4 and opensuse bridging/networking interop problem
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=612006 http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=612006#c0 Summary: xen 4 and opensuse bridging/networking interop problem Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.3 Version: Factory Platform: 64bit OS/Version: openSUSE 11.3 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Basesystem AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: michaelcook_mjc@yahoo.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- Created an attachment (id=367327) --> (http://bugzilla.novell.com/attachment.cgi?id=367327) system /var/log/messages dmesg and hvm config file User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.9.2.4) Gecko/20100513 SUSE/3.6.4-1.11 Firefox/3.6.4 I have opensuse 11.3 milestone 7 working with opensuse 2.6.34-8 as dom0 on W510. (This has been quite the process given the driver support for this newish laptop and finally trying opensuse has been the least problematic) On other installations (Centos, Ubuntu), I found XEN 4.0 networking has been fairly straightforward to set up. However, using Yast and XEN networking together is not working for me. I dont know if this is interop, noobism or a genuine problem but my aim of raising this bug is to provide easier access to XEN which I think is great and so far opensuse seems to be almost there for end-users who want to use this technology. Is there any guides on how to get a HVM to run on opensuse 11.3 dom0 that explain how to use YaST to configure the networking appropriately to just have one eth nic bridged to dom0 eth0? Presenlty, I have an HVM (WinXP or Ubuntu10.04) and after about 2mins they timeout with either xenbr0 not found (original config) or hot-plugin scripts vif not found errors. The VirtualManager panel also does't show the HVM configuration until I manually launch it from the cmd line using xm create. linux-oit2:/etc/xen/vm # xm create WinXP_sp3.hvm Using config file "./WinXP_sp3.hvm". Error: Device 0 (vif) could not be connected. Hotplug scripts not working. The xend-config.sxp states on opensuse to use Yast networking instead of the xen scripts. I've tried creating a bridge (br0) and using this in the HVM configuration file. I then start the VM and it crashes/stops abruptly with hot-scripts plugin vif message. Another minor annoyance is that when the laptop comes up and it has eth0 NIC and wlan0 both are provisioned. Somehow, the eth0 NIC gets an address assigned (looks like the last one it was assigned when plugged in) and the default route goes to that interface. The wlan0 which is attached to the network also gets an address but all traffic is routed to eth0. I would only expect this behaviour if eth0 was in fact up and received valid DHCP. I dont see a network-applet on the task-bar and when I check with Yast Networking I see it is as configured as DHCP. I dont know if this is related too. Also, if I use wlan0 as the bridged interface I get errors (presumably as the bridge is being attached to wlan0) that the operation is not supported. I'm guessing this is a Intel 6000 firmware issue for the wlan controller? I also dont see the HVM config/name appear in the XEN Virt Manager panel. linux-oit2:/etc/xen/vm # xm create Espial-WinXP_sp3.hvm Using config file "./Espial-WinXP_sp3.hvm". Error: Device 0 (vif) could not be connected. To this end, not sure why there isn't a peth0. Can someone point me to the steps to configure the opensuse dom0 to get this working? I think I'm very close to using XEN environment if only I can get over this networking stumbling block and I dont know if it is the noob or the integration of opensuse and xen networking. ;o) I've read this: http://en.opensuse.org/Xen_Full_Virtualization_Example but it seems to be devoid of networking examples/suggestions. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. install opensuse 11.3 m7 with virtualisation (XEN4) 2. run pre-existing HVM with the example configuration file from /etc/xen/examples/ modified 3. wait 3mins 4. timeout and VM closes with cmd-line prompt error hot pluging scripts. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I have the very same problem. Running opensuse 11.3m7 as well. Everything you describe is exactly the same for me.
Thanks for the comment Thomas. Unfortunately I've had very little input from xen-users. Most revolves around networking troubleshooting but I dont think this is the problem. I've not had time to inspect hotplugin errors. Instead, I'm waiting on suse 11.3 RC1 in a few days. I think others have had similar issues manifesting in different ways reading about XEN4.0 on the xen-users group. I dont think anyone has read this bugzilla report from suse which is a shame given its the only distro that even came close to running a dom0 on W510. I hope it magically fixes itself by July otherwise I'm going to have to look to other virtualisation solutions. If you come across anything please update this thread. ;o) I had contemplated trying XEN3.4 in opensuse but I'm not familiar with its package-manager to try this... I had tried different ones on ubuntu but there I had difficulty with driver support for W510 (graphics) and never got as far as launching a domU. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I have this issue too on openSUSE factory with xen-4.0.0_21091_05-4.1
I can start network-enabled VM only once after reboot host system, next tryies to launch vm gives me "Error: Device 0 (vif) could not be connected. Hotplug scripts not working."
The vif hotplug scripts not working is the first error I encountered. If you remove the VIF statement, which isn't very useful I agree, you end up with another hotplug not working error on the disk missing. I may have the disk wrongly specified or options missing? -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Continuing with XEN 4.0 in OpenSUSE 11.3 and kotd (Linux linux-z7hf.site 2.6.34.1-0.0.18.cbab77c-xen #1 SMP 2010-07-29 14:00:26 +0200 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux) I have found the following error when I attempt to connect to the system using the XEN VirtManager:
Unable to open connection to hypervisor URI 'xen:///': unable to connect to 'localhost:8000': Connection refused Traceback (most recent call last): File "/usr/share/virt-manager/virtManager/connection.py", line 971, in _try_open None], flags) File "/usr/lib64/python2.6/site-packages/libvirt.py", line 111, in openAuth if ret is None:raise libvirtError('virConnectOpenAuth() failed') libvirtError: unable to connect to 'localhost:8000': Connection refused
The above message repeats many times on the console, then a box pops up.
When I attempt to create a VM I get a pop-up-box wiht "Error: None" in it and nothing more.
Comment out (xend-unix-server yes) in /etc/xen/xend-config.sxp and export variable export VIRSH_DEFAULT_CONNECT_URI="xen:///" in root’s .bashrc. I dont see their defn's in VirtualManager panel until they are running. I can successfully connect using the console/vnc session.
Perform guest install via virt-install. What's wrong with default bridge "br0" installed along with Xen package ? -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

So I uninstalled all xen-related packages booted into a non-dom0 opensuse kernel and reinstalled XEN hypervisor from YAST. Then followed your blog steps stepping around the domU tools package problems. You shouldn't do that . Just once installed Xen is OK for you, unless you you want to add some new patch and in this case follow procedure like was run for zfs24.patch.
