[Bug 220146] New: Strange and annoying disk activity
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=220146 Summary: Strange and annoying disk activity Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Beta 2 Platform: 64bit OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Basesystem AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: martin.schlander@gmail.com QAContact: qa@suse.de I have a standard (except I selected Reiser) install with KDE. What seems to be once every second there's some disk activity. It's strange and highly annoying. I don't even consider my system to be very low noise, but this constant on/off (tick, tick, tick, tick.. ) disk activity is unbareable. My first suspect was of course beagle, so I ran beagle-shutdown, didn't help. So I installed sysstat and ran iostat (iostat -d 2 /dev/hdb1) for the device. This tells me that there's some writing activity - ~250 blocks are written every two seconds. I don't know what does this, and I don't know how to find out, but it's driving me crazy!! -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=220146 ------- Comment #1 from chrubis@novell.com 2006-11-14 08:27 MST ------- I need to answer some questions witch helps me to realize where the problem is. 1) Does it occurs only when kde is running. 2) Does it occurs after some hours of running. You can also try to stop proceses one by one till it stops and the last one stopped is the one you are looking for. Thanks! -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=220146 ------- Comment #2 from chrubis@novell.com 2006-11-14 08:33 MST ------- I've been told that better way how to find proces witch is using disk is: echo 1 >/proc/sys/vm/block_dump dmesg -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=220146 ------- Comment #3 from mmarek@novell.com 2006-11-14 08:39 MST ------- .. but to avoid the risk or syslog running amok writing that syslog writes that syslog writes ... , shut down syslog first ;) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=220146 martin.schlander@gmail.com changed: What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Status|NEEDINFO |ASSIGNED Info Provider|martin.schlander@gmail.com | ------- Comment #4 from martin.schlander@gmail.com 2006-11-14 12:10 MST ------- Ok, ran some more tests. 1) The user logs into console = no annoying activity. 2) Root-login to KDE = no annoying activity. 3) User-login to KDE = Annoying tick-tick-tick activity is there immediately. Run 'rcsyslog stop' to shutdown syslog before running proposed commands, the disk activity stops, 'rcsyslog start' restarts the annoying disk activity. I'm not sure if this necessarily means that syslog is running amock - or if some other services depending on it could be the guilty party. dmesg is filled with these (99.99%): pci_set_power_state(): 0000:00:0c.0: state=3, current state=5 pci_set_power_state(): 0000:00:0c.0: state=3, current state=5 pci_set_power_state(): 0000:00:0c.0: state=3, current state=5 pci_set_power_state(): 0000:00:0c.0: state=3, current state=5 pci_set_power_state(): 0000:00:0c.0: state=3, current state=5 pci_set_power_state(): 0000:00:0c.0: state=3, current state=5 Maybe there's a relation.. (K)powersave seems to be working fine, my AMD64 cpu is scaled down to 800mhz and everything. I ran: echo 1 >/proc/sys/vm/block_dump dmesg With syslog stopped, I'm not sure if this is relevant since the disk activity is gone with syslog stopped, but just in case here are the last lines of dmesg output. pci_set_power_state(): 0000:00:0c.0: state=3, current state=5 pci_set_power_state(): 0000:00:0c.0: state=3, current state=5 pdflush(128): WRITE block 4000 on hdb1 pdflush(128): WRITE block 4008 on hdb1 pdflush(128): WRITE block 4016 on hdb1 pdflush(128): WRITE block 4024 on hdb1 pdflush(128): WRITE block 4032 on hdb1 pdflush(128): WRITE block 4040 on hdb1 pdflush(128): WRITE block 4048 on hdb1 pdflush(128): WRITE block 4056 on hdb1 pdflush(128): WRITE block 4064 on hdb1 pdflush(128): WRITE block 4072 on hdb1 pdflush(128): WRITE block 4080 on hdb1 pdflush(128): WRITE block 4088 on hdb1 pdflush(128): WRITE block 4096 on hdb1 pdflush(128): WRITE block 4104 on hdb1 pdflush(128): WRITE block 4112 on hdb1 pdflush(128): WRITE block 4120 on hdb1 pdflush(128): WRITE block 4128 on hdb1 kded(18674): dirtied inode 20582 (ifconfig) on hdb1 kded(18675): dirtied inode 50244 (iwconfig) on hdb1 iwconfig(18675): dirtied inode 50240 (libiw.so.29) on hdb1 pci_set_power_state(): 0000:00:0c.0: state=3, current state=5 kded(18676): dirtied inode 20588 (route) on hdb1 pci_set_power_state(): 0000:00:0c.0: state=3, current state=5 SFW2-INext-DROP-DEFLT IN=eth0 OUT= MAC=00:60:08:66:b4:8e:00:00:24:c3:54:f8:08:00 SRC=82.83.140.42 DST=192.168.1.68 LEN=52 TOS=0x00 PREC=0x00 TTL=117 ID=5053 DF PROTO=TCP SPT=4493 DPT=24687 WINDOW=65535 RES=0x00 SYN URGP=0 OPT (020405860103030001010402) pci_set_power_state(): 0000:00:0c.0: state=3, current state=5 pci_set_power_state(): 0000:00:0c.0: state=3, current state=5 kded(4803): dirtied inode 127129 (network_traffic.png) on hdb1 bash(18686): dirtied inode 66355 (dmesg) on hdb1 linux-beta2:/home/cb400f # Hope this info helps. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=220146 ------- Comment #5 from martin.schlander@gmail.com 2006-11-14 12:39 MST ------- Hmm.. seems I have identified the problem. I had installed knemo from a BS repo. When disabling knemo the disk activity stops. In the previous test with syslog stopped knemo was still running, so it appears to be the combination of syslog and knemo that causes this problem. Since knemo is no longer part of the distro I guess this might mean that the issue can be considered resolved. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=220146 ------- Comment #6 from martin.schlander@gmail.com 2006-11-14 13:23 MST ------- It's funny however that with knemo 0.4.6 (same version) on 10.1, there's not such a problem. I ran iostat on my 10.1 installation to check for sure. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
