Black screen, always. With 11.3, it kinda-sorta works, however it doesn't play well with suspend-to-ram or suspend-to-disk, something I use rather frequently. With the updated libdrm and/or kernel (I'm not really sure which), the nouveau driver is just as stable *and* I get suspend-to-ram and suspend-to-disk support. I also encounter a frequent "blanking" of *only* the external monitor. It never blanks the internal LCD. Even when they are both active. I tried Kernel:HEAD today. Using 'nv' works, but I can't get suspend to {disk,ram} to work with 'nv'. I tried nouveau on 12.2 and it does not even start GNOME3 without fallback mode.
