[Bug 417845] New: powersave reports online when on battery ( HP Pavilion ze4200)

Issues originally were combined in bug #408728 On openSUSE 10.3, "powersave -B" reports the following when AC power is disconnected: All primary batteries: Remaining percent: 100 Charging state: AC state: offline Battery 1: Type: primary Remaining percent: 100 Charging state: neither charging nor discharging On openSUSE 11.0, "powersave -B" reports the following when AC power is disconnected: AC state: online I cannot help but assume that this is related to the following issues: 1) Display does not dim when AC power is disconnected. 2) kpowersaved does not show battery information System: HP Pavilion ze4200 (Linux logs report ze4400) AMD Athlon Mobile 2400+ Display Device: ATI RS100 4336 KDE 3 I get the same results whether using kernel 2.6.25.11-0.1-pae, 2.6.25.9-0.2-pae or 2.6.25.5-1.1-pae. The following tests resulted in significantly different results when compared to the other bug: - "lshal -m" generates no output, other than the header. - "cat /proc/acpi/ac_adapter/ACAD/state" reports the state as "on-line" no matter how many times I plug/unplug the AC adapter. The machine is experiencing multiple issues. (See also bug 408728, bug 417844 and bug 417847. I have additional issues that I have not yet created tickets for.) To me the general theme seems to be a lack of communication between Linux and the BIOS/hardware. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Now hit the power or sleep button, plug, unplug AC, close/open lid. For each of them you should see IRQ 9 increase by 1 and see an event line popping out of the blocking: "cat /proc/acpi/event" call. After performing the requested steps on openSUSE 11.0, /proc/acpi/event generated no output, and /proc/interrupts showed a count of zero for IRQ 9 (ACPI). In contrast, on openSUSE 10.3, /proc/acpi/event logged messages for the lid, the power button, AC and battery. The IRQ 9 count was over 15,000, at last check. The lid and power button events generated 2 interrupts each, and the AC unplug and plug events seemed to trigger multiple interrupts, perhaps due to battery charge level changes. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I don't think the post above is related to my problem. That post refers to frequency scaling not working, and about the only feature that is working for me with the stock 11.0 kernel is the CPU frequency adjusting according to load. That said, I am testing with kernel 2.6.27-rc3-HEAD_20080819185209-default This kernel fixes a multitude of my issues, including this one. The test results are as follows: - /proc/acpi/event listed events as expected. Only noticeable difference was that the power button generated only one event, compared to two under 10.3. - The IRQ 9 count at the end of my test was a much more reasonable 10. I will work on updating all of my tickets with the latest test information. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

On this machine /proc/cpuinfo does indeed show the pae flag. For comparison, another machine of mine, based on an AMD Athlon 1333 (ca. 1999) also shows the pae flag. (This machine, which requires the acpi=force parameter, initializes ACPI properly with the PAE kernel.) My older system, based on an Intel Pentium III 600 MHz (running Fedora Core 6/kernel 2.6.22) also shows the pae flag. Perhaps the algorithm that determines which machines support PAE needs to be revisited. Correct me if I am wrong, but in researching PAE I can find no indication that any 32-bit x86 compatible cpus from AMD or Intel support PAE. Yes, the latest BIOS (KAM 1.60 05/2005) is installed. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

What I found is that the ACPI mode is discerned by executing the inw instruction (with port 0xfe10 on this machine). The result with the default kernel is 0x0000; the result with the pae kernel is 0xffff. This erroneous state information prevents the "transition" from taking place with the pae kernel. For comparison, on the Athlon 1333 machine the result from the same inw instruction is 0x0000; this is the same with either the default or the pae kernel. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

The SCI_EN bit is already set to ACPI mode, even ACPI mode is not activated yet. This is for some (HW) reason due to PAE mode enabled. Sorry, nothing we can do (at least as long as you are the only one and have an easy workaround -> default kernel). You can try the patch(es) I am going to attach. As said, nothing we can really do. If it works, you have to compile the kernel on your own.
