AFAICS, the difference is that the WriteCache is disabled for /dev/sdb in openSUSE-13.1. Could you try to enable it with hdparm -W1 /dev/sdb ?
Dmesg from boot and 'hdparm -I /dev/sdb' (both knoppix and openSUSE) could be useful as well. Thanks.
