[Bug 852104] New: service ntp hangs forever, if 127.0.0.2 is not assigned
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=852104 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=852104#c0 Summary: service ntp hangs forever, if 127.0.0.2 is not assigned Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 13.1 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 13.1 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Basesystem AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: hpj@urpla.net QAContact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:25.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/25.0 For some reason, automatic ntp configuration insists in adding 127.0.0.2 to the list of servers. If that address is not assigned for a reason (as this is an installation option), sntp tries to sync with this. sntp OTOH is not smart enough to detect, that this address doesn't exist at all, and waits forever (well a couple of minutes at least..) for a response. This has some potential to circumvent proper booting. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. disable 127.0.0.2 asssignment in /etc/hosts (is available) 2. start ntp configuration 3. add a server (I'm using a local one), set to sync now and on boot Actual Results: ntp hangs, due to: /usr/sbin/sntp -s 127.0.0.2 Expected Results: either make sntp smart enough to detect non existent local addresses or prevent it from syncing against 127.0.0.2. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=852104 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=852104#c1 --- Comment #1 from Hans-Peter Jansen <hpj@urpla.net> 2013-11-27 10:42:36 UTC --- Corrections: sntp OTOH is not smart enough to detect, that this address isn't a ntp server and waits a couple of minutes. Since it does that on every boot, such a setting renders the system unusable. Steps to Reproduce: 1. disable 127.0.0.2 asssignment in /etc/hosts (if available) Steps to fix this manually: 1. edit /etc/sysconfig/network/config add your ntp server _ip_ addresses to NETCONFIG_NTP_STATIC_SERVERS set NETCONFIG_NTP_POLICY to "" 2. rm /var/run/ntp/servers-netconfig -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

IIRC the reason had something to do with dial on demand, but the details escape me right now. Anyway, the configuration is being done by YaST, not by the ntp package itself. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
