[Bug 390219] New: ext3 performance is extremely bad
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=390219 Summary: ext3 performance is extremely bad Product: openSUSE 11.0 Version: Factory Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: captain.magnus@opensuse.org QAContact: kernel-maintainers@forge.provo.novell.com Found By: --- Created an attachment (id=215139) --> (https://bugzilla.novell.com/attachment.cgi?id=215139) hwinfo --reallyall Lately, with factory, I've noticed that my machine sometimes comes to a halt. This happens when there's a lot of disk i/o (installing a virtual machine in VirtualBox, doing zypper dup etc). Applications such as Firefox and Evolution takes ages to respond to anything. I don't know if http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=9546 might be a hint to what's happening. The machine is a quad core with 8gb of memory and SATA3 drive. Attaching hwinfo Also, I've see the same issue on a Thinkpad T43P and another i586 machine as well. Using reiserfs makes the performance improve and I no longer see these issues. Let me know what information I can provide. I don't really have any hard evidence to back me up. It's just something that's very noticeable when trying to use the Desktop. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

--- Comment #19 from Magnus Boman
for ext3, data=ordered is the default. But slowness of the kernel bug referenced in Comment #1 is caused by the fact, that there's an application writing tons of data and in the mean time desktop does often fsync() which is slow... This doesn't seem to be your case as far as I can tell.
I do think this is the case since it is very noticable when Firefox is running. Unfortuantly, I've been traveling but this weekend is a long weekend so I will do the 10.3 tests then. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
