[Bug 962206] New: Can't silence notification sounds for failure to connect to update sources
http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=962206 Bug ID: 962206 Summary: Can't silence notification sounds for failure to connect to update sources Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE Distribution Version: Leap 42.1 Hardware: x86-64 OS: openSUSE 42.1 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: KDE Workspace (Plasma) Assignee: opensuse-kde-bugs@opensuse.org Reporter: darren@freemaninstruments.com QA Contact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:43.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/43.0 Build Identifier: Using KDE. Even with the screen locked, I hear notification sounds going off every few minutes. I'm getting constant notifications about the "Software Updates" thingie on the lower-right of the screen, telling me that it can't connect to the update source. (I am having network issues - so whilst I'm connected, I'm having trouble connecting to servers.) I can't figure out how to silence this. I think there have been changes made to the relevant KDE "System Settings" utility. I'm used to just hitting a button to silence all notifications. (I HATE NOTIFICATIONS THAT MAKE SOUND.) But I don't seem able to. I have to go through every type of notification and turn off sound, and this one isn't listed. Please help! Reproducible: Always -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

No. You can configure notifications in "Configure Desktop" (aka "System Settings", systemsettings5)->Notifications like ever. There's also a button in the actual notification (just left of the close button) to open the corresponding settings. The event source is "Plasma Workspace", this particular error message is probably "Fatal Error". As you have general problems with the installation sources, you might prefer to disable the updater completely though. You can do that in the "System Tray Settings", or just uninstall plasma5-pk-updates. Unfortunately KDE removed the possibility to completely disable notification sounds, you can install and run kmix though which has an explicit "Event Notification" volume slider and can mute them too. The new "Volume Control" applet doesn't have that unfortunately AFAIK. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

I would like to mark it as "taboo (never install)", but that option is hardly ever present. I don't know why it's not present. There is an option of taboo for all in list, but not taboo for a specific package.
What do you mean with "that option is hardly ever present"? If you right-click on a not installed package in YaST it should be there. Or run "sudo zypper al plasma5-pk-updates" after uninstalling it to lock it.
Please make it go away.
We need an updater. You can make it go away yourself, by uninstalling or disabling it. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

Okay, I figured it out. You don't get that option on an installed package, only an uninstalled one. So if you're dealing with a package that keeps getting installed, marking it as taboo is a two step process. You have to uninstall it and then run the sw tool again just to mark it as taboo. That's pretty terrible IMHO. The software update tool is terrible also. It spams notifications, and it needs to go away. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

Feel free to report a bug against YaST.

Can you offer an alternative? If not, it won't go away. Uninstall or disable it if you don't like it. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.
