[Bug 497217] New: yast reboot popup comands me to reboot in an unfriendly way
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=497217 Summary: yast reboot popup comands me to reboot in an unfriendly way Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE.org Version: unspecified Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Documentation AssignedTo: ke@novell.com ReportedBy: jw@novell.com QAContact: adrian@novell.com Found By: --- After installing patches, a popup appeared, saying At least one of the updates installed requires a system reboot to function properly. Reboot the system. [OK] It would be more userffiendly to name the updates, that need this. It is unclear, weather or not the system will reboot upon pressing OK. Saying 'Please reboot the system as soon as is convenient.' would be more polite. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Yes, is is ambigious. And yes, it would be good name the package that requires the reboot. No "please", please ;) My proposal (to be proofread): At least one of the updates installed requires a system reboot to function properly. Save your data and reboot the system manually as soon as possible. Wondering whether we add a reboot button to this message box as available on another OS. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

What about a summary pop up like the "automatic changes" pop up in software manager (see attachment)? * "OK" installs the patches and reboots the system. * "Cancel" returns to the patch management. Martins suggestion is intrusive to the yast workflow. I'd like to avoid that is far as possible. I still prefer Karl's solution from comment#1.
Maybe, we could enhance it and add a "Reboot" button: ... or click "Reboot Now" to reboot the system immediately.
From the security POV, that's probably a wanted feature.
Is there a d-bus interface or something similar to check whether the user has unsaved data in a desktop application (Gnome and KDE)? -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Example: Patch Description ------------------------------------------- postgresql - postgrespl security update Remote authenticated users bla bla bla. Note: Patch requires a system reboot to function properly. References: * XXXXXX (bugzilla) I was also thinking about marking reboot requiring patches with an icon but having two columns with icons didn't seem like a good idea to me :-) Additional to that I would vote to change the text of the pop up according to Jürgens in the inital description or comment#1 -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

What about adding a note to the patch description?
The patch already has such note and user is warned with a popup similar to your proposal before installing the patch. This bug is about another popup that opens after all patches are installed. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

See column 'Restart' kupdateapplet also says 'Reboot your system as soon as possible'. All perfectly fine (except that at that point I can no longer review the packages that require the reboot). I hope we could agree on 1. Better wording of the text in the popup in question (comment 1) 2. Summary of patches which are reason for reboot (comment 2) Remember that you can't revert patches installation from the point of popup which is actually shown _after_ all the patches were installed. But you can do it during the update: YaST also tells you that upcoming kernel update _will_ require reboot and at that time, you can choose not to install it. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
