From the initial description it looked like you were logging into the Linux console and then ran startx. Which simply no longer works since a long time.

AS I use every time the same name for the initial user, there should be some initial data ( from leap 42.2 ) that conflict with 42.3 install. But then it doesn't make much sense to create an initial user with the same name, which already exists on the separate HOME partition. It will be overwritten. Still you may not be able to login with a user from the separate HOME partition, if the system radically changed. But then you need to look into the ~/.xsession-errors file to figure out, what's going wrong. We don't claim to migrate user data for fresh installations, do we? At first reboot, get logging screen with initial user name Type the password Get a blank screen with a little windows X type with a message: "Could not start kdeinit5. Check your installation" So I stopped Xserver from keyboard. Got the logging screen Restart the computer and edit the command line and add "init 3" Log as initial user.
