Through investigation, it appears that at-spi2-core is not being installed along with Nautilus. Installing it manually results in Nautilus generating thumbnails and directory previews much faster, as expected. Some investigation must be done, since Nautilus delegates the thumbnail generation to proper thumbnailers (according to /usr/share/thumbnailers).
