See attached screenshots. The result is that all compete for input and nothing is able to capture the full passphrase. IMO there must be a full, hard, uninteruptible, not-overwritten stop when something is started to ask for the passphrases. IMHO asking the passphrase should have such a strong dependency that other services have to wait on it and only after a timueout the system continue to boot. Normally this is done by systemd-cryptsetup(8), the systemd-cryptsetup-generator(8), and the password agent systemd-ask-password(1)

It asked for the passphrase, there are '*' shown while the system still dumps unneeded fsck messages to the console. It must not print those while kbd input is expected. There was no feedback if the passphrase was good or bad or recognized. There was no disk io or anything once I entered it. Keyboard input was not accepted AFAIK. It printed something about emergency mode, see attached screenshot. Now the fsck messages are gone, but systemd still times out. So if others say crypt happens to work for them, I assume thats unstacked crypt? Not something like crypted lvm on top of md on top of multipath on top of something? But it failed to start the emergency mode, repeating the emergency message for hours and days. Thanks. Today I tried to upgrade to Factory. This does not work either. At least the emergency service appears to work now. It suggests to run journalctl -xb. Its output shows that the crypt partition timed out, just as it did for the last months. Or is it a year already? Once I left the shell, much to my surprise, the crypt partition was finally mounted. Perhaps the dependencies are not expressed correctly. Or not at all. This is simply math that is the original insserv (not the current perl script) had calcuated the same dependency chains in past. Note that neither the old boot.crypto nor mkinitrd scripts supported arbitrary complicated setups. Some things just work(ed) by chance. Just with 20140901 Factory snapshot it happens to work again, failed in previous snapshot from August.
