[Bug 340603] New: It's dificult to use skype (no microphone input with)
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=340603 Summary: It's dificult to use skype (no microphone input with) Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: Final Platform: Other OS/Version: Mac OS X 10.3 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Sound AssignedTo: tiwai@novell.com ReportedBy: nice@titanic.nyme.hu QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: Other This bug may be the same as Bug 245679 but I'm not totally sure. My machine is a Compaq nc6320 incorporating 82801G (ICH 7 family) chipset. So far sometimes(!) I had to adjust my audio settings by alsamixer in order to ba able to use microphone capture and thus skype. I attach a windows snapsot of alsamixer. You can see on the picture that the recording was enabled for the docking station and capture level was zero in spite of the fact that earlier I enabled the recording for the microphone and set the capture level to about 80%. In spite of this my settings were sometimes changed (I don't know what chenged them). Sometimes only the recording "went" form the microphone to the docking station (to tell the truth I actually use a docking station), but other times the capture level dropped to zero too. I can only use alsamixer since KMix of KDE seems to be unable to control or even monitor the capture level. (Alsamixergui also seem to be unable to some tasks, for example mutind Caller-ID or off-hook). I would advised you to include some workarond for this inconvenience, for example in the startup scripts but today (09.11.2007) - as usually I do - I upgraded my system via openSUSE uptader, and my microphone capture problem changer somewhat. (The updates include the kernel version 2.6.22.12-0.1.) Now alsamixer seems to work, but even when I set the mixer correctly, there is no microphone capture. I cannot use skype anymore:( -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

You may be able to derive the real solution from it. At first I realised that I'm able to record sound from my mycrophone by KRecord, so the problem has to lay somewhere around the kernel-skype interface. I lays there indeed. If I change the 'Sound In' device in skype's options from default to the first item in the list (HDA Intel (hw:Intel,0)) (as seen on the attached screenshot), the skype works again. If I revert my selection to default skype ceases to work again. It's interresting that skype fails to call anyone (it complains about audio capture problem) when KRecord it recording, even when I select the default sound in device, and skype would be unable to capture audio otherwise. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Can you record it via "arecord -fcd somefile.wav" properly? Also, try to get the file in the non-working state before your workaround. When hw:0 is chosen, it cannot be used by multiple applications at the same time. The "default" is for the configuration with multiplexing (and soft-mixing for playback) while hw:0 is the exclusive raw hardware access. BTW, please reset NEEDINFO flag if you provided the requested information. Otherwise the developer might not notice that you answered. Yes, without any problem. I tried it right now. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Also, try to get the file in the non-working state before your workaround.
Sorry, I forgot to test it previously, but now it's done. So, the result is that when I change the capture settings in alsamixer so that capturing is enabled on the docking station (as it was the case this morning after docking, so I had to commit the workaround in order to be able to capture from the microphone), then I cannot capture from the microphone. But not only the internal microphone is unable to record any sound! If I want to use a headset connected to the docking station, the the right setting is to enable capturing from the microphone again, not from the docking station. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I did have the same problem, sound works OK, however the microphone input did not go to Skype, and I found the solution in this bug report. In Skype the default "Sound In" device did not work, I changed it into "HDA NVidia (hw:NVidia,0)" and after that it worked. The strange thing is that shortly after installation of openSUSE 11.0, I did it twice, it once worked without this workaround, but after that first time the microphone did not work for Skype. Is it possible to configure openSUSE such that the default "Sound In" device works? It took me half a day to find this solution. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I guess you hit it. Basically it's a problem of Skype, and we cannot fix it (by obvious reasons). Anyway, I'd like to close this as WONTFIX -- 10.3 problem is too old to reproduce, and 11.0 problem is likely a Skype issue, should have been improved in the later version. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
